Vaccination schedule for sick puppy with unknown vaccination history? I recently bought my 4mo old puppy from an unreputable breeder and the shot records are very questionable. He is currently getting over kennel cough, giardia, and worms so I haven't given him any shots since I got him. So can anyone give me advice on how to procede with his vaccinations? Do I start from the very beginning of the vaccination schedule once he recovers from his illnesses? Where do I start? |
Welcome to YT & congratulations on your new puppy!! I am sorry you have had so much to deal with. I would first start with a vet that you trust. Until your puppy is completely well, no shots should be given. Particularly since your little guy has already had some difficulties, I would proceed very cautiously with shots, making sure only one at a time is given and nothing in combination. Give only the vaccines that are absolutely necessary. Both kennel cough and giardia can take several rounds of meds to clear up completely (dealt with both ourselves). Gheesh! What a handful. Giardia and worms should be treated right away. I know Giardia can be passed onto a human; a friend got it working at a vet's. Kennel Cough will probably have to run it's course, like a human cold. He really should be brought in to see the vet for treatment. All of these things could have been prevented. Too bad you didn't get him sooner. Congratulations on your new baby! P.S. The further North you go, the less expensive it is for a vet. |

I would go by what your vet recommends. I'm guessing he will want to assume that no shots were given since your breeder was so bad. Do make sure your vet checks his knees and does a bile acids test to check his liver function. When you get a poorly bred puppy, there is also a big chance of genetic problems, too. |

After your puppy is well, I would highly recommend you find a vet that would do a titer test to see if he needs any vaccinations. The people you bought him from may have given him all the shots he needs or more. Giving him more shots could really compromise his health. Until you know he has had his immunizations you should not take him outside in areas where other dogs might have gone. |
Some vets will only give two sets of puppy shots instead of the traditional three or four if the pup is older. They don't have maternal antibodies anymore, so they don't need as many vaccines because maternal antibodies counteract them. I would prefer to give two sets and at the very most three (for DHPP). Rabies wouldn't have been given yet, so you are safe to do that at its regular time. I wouldn't do any of this until your pup is better. He/she will have to stay inside almost completely until then. |
