New puppy has Giardia I am so upset. We just brought Lil Cosmo's brother home last Thursday and I took him to the vet on Friday. They called me Christmas eve and told me the stoll sample came back and was positive for Giardia and something else. We have to keep him and Cosmo seperate which is hard and I worry Cosmo will be infected. Cosmo also came to us with the problem and my DH is very upset and said we should call the breeder and complain. Treatment is expensive on top of the $2200 we spent to get Cosmo all better last week. Does anyone have suggestions? He was getting trained to go pee outside but now per vet we have to keep his stools away from Cosmo and suggested pee pads inside so we can clean afrea with bleach daily. He cries all night from being in cage alone even though is by my bed. What should I do about socializing? and breeder? Upset for our little guy...Bandie Cosmo's momma and still unnamed puppy:confused: |
Oh no! I'm so sorry you are all going through this. :( I have no advice to offer, but I'm sure someone will. |
Our miniature dachshund was shipped to us, and she got giardia and coccidia. The first 6 mths. of her life is all a blur to me... mass amounts of diahrrea and tons of administering medications. I forget which one she got first, but I guess all dogs carry bacteria in them, and stressful situations (like flying on an airplane) can make them flare up. Then when we were treating her for that, her immune system went down and she aquired the other one. I think it was giardia first, then coccidia while we were treating for the giardia. Like I said, it's all a blur, but my heart goes out to you. SO frustrating! |
Iam so sorry your babie is sick:( hopng he is well soon. |
He has Coccidia too! I am just flabergasted! His stools are solid but YES he has to take medication every day for the next 2 weeks and be isolated from other dog. Poor thing is so lonely and I am afraid he will be 13 weeks when tested again and then we have start from scratch with potty training and socializing with Cosmo. Plus my hands are geeting dry from all the washing! |
How frustrating! I think you should definitely let the breeder know. Depending on health guarantee, he/she may pay your medical expenses for the new puppy. He must have already had the giardia before you got him, so I think the breeder should offer some help. Also, it would be good for the breeder to know because I imagine there are littermates that could be infected also. |

when i got my yorkie he too came with giardia and intern got very sick from it. Is your dog on Flagyl? I know i was given that for 2 weeks and he ended up having to take it longer. Make sure you are constantly washing your hands as it can be passed to humans. I wouldn't be too concerened about potty training and socializing my dog was hospitalized for 2 weeks becuase of it ans he was easy to socialize and potty train after he was home. I think potty pads is a good idea, or picking up all stools outside after the dog goes. Hopefully this is helpful and i hope your little one gets better soon. who was the breeder and are they taking responsibility for the vet bills? |

I feel your pain. Marcel had giardia twice at age 4-5 mths. (not from the breeder). How old is Cosmo? Oftentimes, adult dogs who contract giardia have no symptoms at all, or have a brief diarrhea (ie. 1 day) and that's it. So, if he is older and gets infected, he may not get sick at all. |
If this was the initial vet visit (within the first 48 or 72 hours, whichever your contract states) then I would definitely let the breeder know. I'm a breeders, I feel there's no reason you should have to take a dog in poor health and to have to pay those bills. This breeder not knowing, would hopefully be willing to work with you and replace your pup and pre-test your new one (you wouldn't want to bring another one in with it and then test and possibly expose your other dog to it). If it's after the 72 hours, it could have been picked up after leaving the breeder's premises (I'm not sure about the incubation period of giardia). Even then your breeder may still be willing to work with you. They need to know about the illness that may be coming from there grounds. I would keep a receipt (for the dates in particular)from the vet and call the breeder... |

GREAT...GET THIS!!! I picked up the puppy Thursday at 6:00pm and took him to my vet the next morning (Friday at 9:00 am) his feces was tested and came out positive. IT GETS BETTER!! I called Fran and told her the puppy was sick and that she should pay the vet bills that were specific to the treatment for Giardia and Coccia and she said "NO" yes folks she said no! Not only that we have no contract and she cashed my check the day I paid her. IT GETS EVEN BETTER! Our first yorkie, Cosmo also came home with Giardia and I just found out we bought him from Fran's daughter! So basically the same breeder! What a scam this lady is running! The only thing that brings me any satisfaction is that he could have gone to a home where the people did not provide vet care like some young girl etc. At least he is with us where he is receiving vet care and being pampered. I would post the breeder's name but I am sure that it would be appropriate. I truly now believe she is a "backyard breeder" and into yorkies for nothing but the money!:thumbdown |
I dont know if it is appropriate or not to post her name here, but as someone who is actively searching for a yorkie (pretty much up and down the west coast) I'd sure like to know who to avoid! Perhaps you could go into the breeders review forum and post it there...I think that would be the appropriate place. |
