choking when excited when i come home or when mocha gets excited, she starts to exhibit this "choking" noise where it seems like she forgets to take a breath (because she's so excited?). I'm not sure what it is, but it sounds like she has a hairball. :confused: Nothing ever comes out and after a couple of minutes of calming her down, she's normal. Has anyone else observed this? I've talked with my vet about it and she says mocha is just too excited, but i'm not sure. |
Mckenzie has been doing this as well as after she drinks water. My vet thinks it's a trachea issue, but I need to get more tests done. It may be that she's just sucking air in too quickly.. :) |
We've had this happen. It really is like over-excitement. Sometimes though it could be trachea or something else, so definitely do some investigating. When we come home, we make the dogs sit and be calm for a minute because they were going BONKERS. Mogli sometimes would get over-excited and choke like you're taking, but it wasn't very long at all and we basically learned what actions would cause it, and tried to avoid those types of situations / actions. |
It seems like such a common problem as I keep seeing this over and over on the forum. I can't understand why vets have no idea. |

yes they can have trachea issues, but hopefully you led her on a harness so as not to add any stress to the area Barney seriously does something like that once in awhile and it is kind of like a seizure. Although honestly one night he did cough up a hairball. I know sometimes he is like a cat. I usually just pet him and look at him and he seems fine. But def. check with your vet:) |

When I posted about this I was told it was reverse sneezing. It's definitely from over excitement or drinking and getting water up their nose. I find all I have to do is touch mine and they stop so it seems to be something they have control over. My pomeranian used to do it too. His was really bad and my vet said it was from the dangly thing in the throat being too long and flipping up the wrong way. He did surgery on my pom and he was much better but still did it occassionally. Don't worry too much about it unless it's uncontrollable. |

It is an anatomical problem with the collapsing trachea. Not much you can do for it. I have one Yorkie with it and the other without it. She went through a period where it was really bad and my vet gave me some pills to help the swelling and it settled down quite a bit. She still does it about once a week though. I just have to pick here up and calm her down. |
