New Puppy! Help!1 I just got my first Yorkie yesterday and he is sick. He went in on the 10th for his second round of vacc. and the vet prescribed Zithromax, Flagyl and SMZ and some cough meds in a syringe. I am so worried about him. He has a cough, is not very active and did nothing but sleep all day. Even had trouble getting him to drink water (finally drank the whole bowl last night) Is this something that I should be worried about? He has a follow up visit tuesday. What do I do? |
Do you know why he has him on all the meds?? I do not know if the flagyl for dogs is the same as humans or not but my oldest son is a St. Judes patient & he had to have the flagyl b/f & it is for when you have had so many antibiotics that it kills all the good and bad bacteria therefore the bad bacteria then flourishes & signs are extreme & uncontrollable bowel movements & other I don't remember, Like I said I do not know if its the same as humans but if i was you I would prob call & take him in tomorrow if he is no better. did you take him in for the shots & meds or did the breeder? |
The breeder took him to the vet. He said the meds are for preventative care but he already has the cough. That is what the Zithromax is for the Flagyl is to prevent loose stool as well as the SMZ. He is doing much better today; walking around and playing but I am worried about the fact I have never given meds to a dog before. He HATES taking them, it was a big struggle this morning. Any suggestions to help make sure he gets all of it? |
I know the flagyl is extremely nasty (funny story), maybe someone will have some ideas b/c it sounds like he really needs every bit of this med I don't know if i would try putting it in anything & then he not get it all??? If I was you I would contact that vet tomorrow regardless, I'm not trying to be ugly or anything but why would the breeder let him go so sick? how old is he? |
10 weeks. The weather here has been horrible with one day being 80 and the next 36 and rainy. It only figures that with everybody getting sick that the animals would feel it too! My aunt recommended a small piece of cheese for each med and maybe he would eat it but am afraid of the same thing, that he wont get it all! |
I'm in louisiana so I know what ya talking about!! that's the same age as my baby, I know some here have mentioned yogurt you could try and see if he likes a little bit of yogurt by itself & if he does like it then try & mix some of the med w/it?? keep me posted |
Thank yo so much for the information! Will keep you updated on how he is doing!! |
I am assuming the meds are liquid?? I have to give Bella medication every other day and I have learned if I approach her calmly and show her the syringe and tell her it is time for her medication instead of trying to ram it down her throat, she will allow me to give it to her :) seems obvious. I also put the syringe half way in her mouth give her a little bit at a time and pull syringe out so she can swallow. If I give it all at once the liquid just goes shooting back out of her mouth. I've just learned if I am calm and nor forceful she will not fight me and try to run off. |
My Maddie has been on Flagyl off and on for IBD. I give it to her whenever she has a flare up. My vet gave me little clear capsules that I take apart, put the pill inside and close it back together. When I asked my vet why it needs to be in a capsule, he said because the taste is so horrid. Maybe you could give your vet a call and ask for some of those empty capsules. Then, you could still put the pill in something, but your puppy wouldn't get the awful taste. Good luck and I hope your little one improves! |
We went to the vet yesterday and he is going to be ok! She took him off all the meds(said they weren't necessary) and recommended 1/4 tsp. of Robitussin DM for the cough twice a day. He has a strong heart and all is well! Thank all of you so much for the advice! |
Glad to read that your baby is doing better :D Cant wait to see pics :) |
I'm so glad your new baby is going to be OK! |
