yorkie rescue yesterday We just rescued a frail and malnourished yorkie yesterday and are working on building back a lot of obviously shattered trust. We have a doll of a yorkie already and wanted a companion for her. They have just started warming up to each other and starting to play. Has anyone experienced something like this and have a happy ending to share? |
Yes I do. We rescued our little guy over two years ago. He lived in a puppymill for nine years of his life. He had only been (free) for a month when we adopted him. When we went to pick him up we took our other two kids so they could be part of it. Roo was so scared about everything. It took time and patience. He had so much to learn, but I'm here to say that he's doing wonderful now and there was just one time when our other two put him in the pecking order. After that everything was fine. All three get along great and look out for each other. God bless you for giving this little yorkie a home. Just takes time.:animal-pa |
I'm so glad you rescued the baby. He will need time to adjust to his new loving environment, and might not eat or play normally for a few weeks. Just hang in their and keep trying. Maybe some boiled chicken and rice would increase his appetite. |
You got some really great advice here..... My daughter has a female retired breeder....The girl had no knowledge of people....So sad and pathetic....With love and good food and patience, Roxi is adorable and fun and loving....She gets along with everyone now....She will panic every now and then but has come so far.....So yes, it can work....Just takes time... Hi and welcome to yt:) So sweet of you to take in a rescue:) It will get better as they get to know each other:) would love to see pics of your babies |
Thanks Thanks guys. She has made some nice progress just in one day. She is now trying to play with my first Yorkie Emma a little and will eat a piece of chicken and then run. We are settling on a name for her and it looks like it will be Ginger. She goes to the vet Tuesday for a checkup and spaying. Will try to get a picture on as soon as my husband has the time to do it for me. |

Oh, wow. So glad that she has you to help her bounce back. Jesse was a puppymill dog and when I got him he was malnourished, had thinning hair, and was totally not socialized with people. He's doing so amazingly, though. By the end of the first week we were gaining his trust and now he loves people and dogs and is a happy, playful little thing! Good luck with Ginger! |
My Lady was tied to a tree and left behind by her previous owner when she moved. That was eight years ago and if you could see her now, prancing around in her beautiful dresses and bows, you would never believe it! Adopting an adult dog is very different than getting a new puppy, but there are also a lot of similarities. In many areas, like housetraining, you have to go back to basics and treat them exactly as you would a puppy. You have to always remember that unlike puppies who love you almost instantly, you often have to first earn trust, and then love, with an adult dog. Once you have earned that love, though, you will never feel so rewarded and loved in your life. :) A fabulous book that helped me and is recommended by many rescue groups is Secondhand Dog by Carol Lee Benjamin. Amazon has it or you can have your bookstore order it. It's very inexpensive, under $10. |
He's a cutie and I'm glad he's found a loving forever home! About a month ago I brought home a rescue and he's had quite a story. He's 8 months and this is his 5th home. He was born in a puppy mill and sold to a lady with MS that couldn't take care of him. We think he was left in a crate all day because she couldn't take care of him because he has some serious anxiety issues and CANNOT be left in a crate or gated by himself. When we did gate him in the bathroom or in his crate, he had diaherria and would mush it all up and get it all over him. This went on about 3-4 times a day for about 2 weeks before we decided to experiment and let him have free reign of the room with Chip, since then he's been doing better. Anyways, the lady realized she couldn't take care of him, so she took him to a lady that she knew would take him and find a home for him. He was held at this place for two months while another lady claimed she was going to take him. She did take him, but only kept him for four days, and brought him back because he wasn't potty trained. The lady we both got him from told her up front that he wasn't potty trained and it was pouring rain outside for the four days she had him. We're assuming she tried the crate with him and he freaked out again and she didn't want to put up with it. Well she brought him back and my friend's mom (she is friends with the rescue lady and has three rescue yorkies of her own) gives me a call and tells me about this "slightly bigger non potty trained yorkie that is 7 months old, but very smart, sweet, and neutered." I, being the sucker that I am, went and picked him up the next day :-) He's had issues with his potty training, anxiety, and he's hand shy, but we are working with him slowly and he's starting to understand. I think he knows he's found his forever home too by the way he acts. When we would take him places he refused to get in and out of the car by himself and when we picked him up he would just shake and shake. We figured out that he was scared he was going to be staying at a new place since that is all he's ever know was hopping from one place to another, but now he gets in and out on his own. He's still cautious, but he'll do it with a little encouragement. By him doing that, it lets me know that he knows he's my lil boy and I'm his mommy forever :-) Also, when we brought him home he was 7.7 lbs, but he extremely tall and long. He's about 16" long and he's about 2-3" taller than our 8 lbs yorkie. He looks like he could easily weigh about 13 lbs when he's at his proper weight. We haven't weighed him lately, but since I changed his diet to a much better food and have been feeding him extra, he's gained a lot of weight and is looking healthy. He still has a couple lbs to go though! Good luck with your new little one! Sorry this was so long. We'd love to see more pictures. |

Ah, look at that sweet face. He has such haunted eyes, doesn't he? I can't wait to follow his progress here and see the shine and sparkle come back to those eyes. Bless you for taking this guy in. |
