knee popping out my vet has put Annie on prednisone 5mg at 1/2 tablet twice a day. this has been going on for the last month. She is still popping her knee out. Only other solutions would be to crate her for a least 2 weeks. Has anyone every tape the knee for several days? |
I've never had the problem, but am hoping your baby is ok. |
Just curious what the prednisone is for? My pom is on it for her liver disease. I know the prednisone makes them a little more active. I hope it starts helping soon. |
your vet put your dog on pred for a knee problem???? odd did your vet say it was a luxating patella or something different? |
hi, my mickey has both knees that pop out and he may need them pinned when he is a bigger boy.when they pop out i just rub his knee and lift his leg up and down so the knee is bending like the vet showed me. he just gets metacam for inflamation when it gets bad. |
Wanted a x-ray but he said it was her knee popping out.(luxating patella). Gave her prednisone to take every day for the inflammatory. Thought maybe about taping the leg around the knee to hold it in. what do you think? |

i think that's absolute ridiculous and would find another vet. pred is used by old school vets for that problem. there are newer and better drugs out there now to that are non-steroidal to help with the problem. Also you cannot TAPE the knee in to keep it in place..... surgery is required if the keep is constantly doing it. seriously find a new vet... one that knows about modern medicine. |

Please get another opinion. |
SURGERY IS THE ONLY WAY TO FIX LUXATING PATELLAS. You cannot fix this condition with medication, you cannot rest it away, and you certainly cannot tape the knee in place. If this is happening frequently my guess would be the LP is pretty bad, if it is not properly treated it will get worse and your dog will become prematurely and severely arthiritic. Now, I apologize if that seems scolding, it certainly is not directed at you, but rather your vet. The treatment he has prescribed does not comport with the general standard of care for this condition. I would suggest finding a new vet and seeing an orthopedic specialist. In the mean time I would supplement your pup's diet with glucosamine or at least give treats containing it. Bruce has had both knees operated on and is as good as new, but one thing is for sure he would have gotten worse without the surgery. |
Annie's knee Thanks all for the advice on treating my little Annie. Will do some checking for another vet in the area that might know more about this knee problem. Will go and get some glucosamine supplements and Vitamin C for her. She is only 5 months old. |

Breeder said none of her other dogs have this problem. So she may have done something to her knee while running around the yard. Hope to see a new vet on Monday and see what he thinks the problem is. |
