Spay Incision Problem AGAIN This incision of Ellie's is making me nervous. She got the bumps underneath from the internal sutures and the vet said it's fine. Another vet (in the same office) looked at the incision 4 days after the spay because I was concerned about some things I was seeing. It is fine. Now I am feeling a HUGE lump under the skin (marble size maybe) compared to all the other smaller lumps (pea sized) under the skin. Maybe an abscess? At the top of the incision there is a sharp spot on her skin that looks like a VERY TINY blister or scab. It is pokey and I"m hoping the tech didn't maybe miss a staple? I wish the vet would've taken them out... Do we need to go in? |
Is the area red and feverish? |
The skin around the two spots is not red. It is not excessively hot. |
We had the same thing happen with Adison, she developed a marble sized lump from her internal sutures, turns out she had a reaction to the type they used and we had a second surgery to remove the cyst that had formed, after a round of antibiotics killed the infection. The second surgery was easy as pie you couldn't even tell she had surgery again! I hope your solution is something simple! Let us know how everything turns out. Sending prayers. |
Really? Another surgery? When did your dog's large lump appear? A few weeks after surgery? It has been four weeks and she has had the smaller lumps all along but I just noticed this one is way too big... Oh no... |
I would take her in to see the vet but no need for an emergency vet fee. Will they be open tomorrow? |
They are open 24/7, so yes they will be. Ellie's regular vet isn't in til Monday. I guess I will have to settle for someone else. I am not sure I would be charged an er fee (although I'd rather go tomorrow) since it is their incision so their problem.:) |
She has an appt. tomorrow.:( If anyone else has any ideas, please lemme know. I don't want to have to go through the surgery thing again. |
My little one had like a little lump to and then her boobs got lumps in them like they were getting milk. The doc said it was fine. It eventualy went back to normal. |
Can you take a clear picture of her incision? i know you can't see the lump in the picture but i can at least tell you if there is a staple or something still in there. |
Darn it. I don't have a digital camera. could you explain what it would feel like to the touch if a staple was in there? How often does that happen? This is a very small scabby blister. It is shiny so it looks blistery otherwise I would call it a scab. It is pretty dark in color. When I touch it and wiggle it back and forth, the movement it makes under the skin is not explainable. It is gross though. She doesn't like it when I play with the scab for too long. I can touch the large lump as much as I want though. Maybe the scab is an abcsess and the big lump is a cyst? I dunno. |

The first thing that comes to mind isn't an abscess or a cyst. sometimes when you rub along the spot where an incision was you can feel the sutures underneath. THe sutures can take a few months to dissolve in the body so that is what you could be feeling possibly. i honestly can't tell you for sure tho because this is something i would need to feel for myself. |
Well, thanks for tryin' anyway. You're awesome Kellie. I was feeling the scab again and it appears as though I was wrong. It is more blistery because there is no way it would come off. It felt a bit sharp before which made us think of a staple. I know the lumps up and down the incision are normal. Ellie's seems acceptable until yesterday. This big one just appears (about 3 or 4 times bigger than the other ones). When you put her on her feet and feel it, it sags down pretty low. She has to be seen I guess. I am tired of problems. |

Mine have had "pokey things" too and it turned out to be the end of the stitch poking through the skin. If it bothered them (or me  ) too much I cut it off or just pulled it out if enough time had passed that it wasn't attached to the inside stitch anymore - if that makes sense. I guess I would at least call the vet first and tell them what's going on to see if you need to go in again. |
