Princess has eclampsia Princess after having a perfect pregnancy and labor and even though we have supplemented and did everything by the book was rushed to the vet this afternoon she has eclampsia and she is on drip and must be away from the 4 babies for at least 24 hours so we are having to nurse them only I can't get them to take the bottle, I am so distressed first my Princess is in hospital and then trying to get the babies to nurse from the bottle, any ideas or hints would be greatly appreciated and thank you! |
OH NO! I hope that she'll be okay. I have no experience with nursing pups. Perhaps if you copy this post to the Breeder section, someone will jump on it to help you and the puppies All I have are prayers, and they're on the way:hands: |
Try using a syringe and just lightly tapping it so they get small amounts in their mouth. Some just won't suck those bottles. Be careful of giving too much too quickly because they can aspirate it and get pnemonia. |
Also, make sure you keep them warm. Never, ever feed a cold puppy. |
She could try a small amount of nutrical on the tip of the nipple. Hopefully that will stimulate their appetite, or atleast get them going in the right direction. |
Thanks for all the hints. They wouldn't eat the puppy formula so I went to some breeder sites and got a recipe I'm feeding goats milk mixed with whole fat plain yogurt, a little karo syrup, sterilized water and egg yolks and I found human premie bottles and that is working really well. We live in the Caribbean and don't tend to use air conditioning so the ambient room temperature stays around 83 but I also have them nestling on a hot water bottle lined with towels I'm rubbing them so they do their business and I can get them to piddle but nothing else so far, they are 9 days old today and fortunately very fat and in excellent health, I wish I could say the same for Princess We'll know more tomorrow on how long she has to be hospitalized but our vet is recommending that she not return to nursing full time may be just once or twice daily and the rest of the time we feed the puppies....all I care about is that Princess comes home and is back with us even one night without her is horrible. Again thanks for all the tips and help and suggestions, what a nightmare to see her go through this! |
I am so sorry to hear about Princess and good luck with feeding all of he pups. Warmly, Deborah PS I also hope Princess returns home very soon. |
Oh my goodness, what a situation to be in. I don't have any suggestions but will say a prayer for all your little ones. |
Could you post in breeder section? I just read about Princess' condition and extremely serious plus the hand feeding may last quite a while. Warmly, Deborah I would add HELP in title. |
Thank you have posted in Breeder section Thank you for all the kind thoughts and ideas. I've posted in the breeder section. At the moment I'm just exhausted, for 9 days I was up every 2 hours feeding Princess and now I'm up every 2 hours feeding babies! I hope we will get to bring Princess home later today but then we have the wrenching time of separating her from the babies. I want to keep her with her puppies but I can't risk her having a relapse if she tries to nurse, yikes what a quandary |

In my younger years I showed and bred Yorkies. I had some mommas that came down with eclampsia, my Vet. just gave them calcium through the vein and I took the momma home and she went back to her puppies. I fed her some cottage cheese with every meal. And there was never a recurrance.... |
I had a momma that came down with eclampsia, my Vet didnt do any thing for her sent her home and told me to give her chicken broth and liver and she went back to her puppies. She died. I hated that vet. |
