Please help diagnose Buster's problem... Buster is 11 months old now, we havent had any major health issues with him but recently hes been doing something that kinda scares me for a minute. He does this in and out hacking/snorting through his nose and mouth, and looks like he cant catch his breathe. But if I just hold him and speak in a calm voice to get him to relax, he stops. Its usually when he gets very excited, when I come home and see him for the first time in a few hours, or when my girlfriend comes over and Buster sees her for the first time that day. But there have been occassions when hes done this just out of no where when nothing exciting is going on. I dont know what it could be, I am bringing him in for a full check up in 2 weeks but wanted to get some imput before I go to the doctor with him. |
Dont worry. That is not uncommon in yorkies. It is probably reverse sneezing. http://www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/PETTIP...eSneezing.html Collapsing tracheas are also a problem in yorkies so talk that over with your vet (and only use a harness, no collars for walking) but I think it sounds like reverse sneezing. http://www.papillonclub.org/Education/trachea.htm A lot of people have a hard time telling the difference between the two...I know I did and assumed the worst when Gus first did it but it is just the sneezing... so your vet will be the best person to ask but you can also try to gently rub his throat. When it's reverse sneezing that might help make it stop, with collapsing trachea it can cause them to cough. |
Wow, that sounds spot on. Reverse sneezing..... And yes Ive only used harnesses with Buster since, never a collar. Thanks for the info, I'm glad its nothing serious. |
Glad I could help. :) |

Making them breath through the mouth usually stops reverse sneezing pretty quickly. If its reverse sneezing you can cover both nostrils with your fingers while he is hacking and it will stop. CT will not stop that way. I would also bring it up to the vet to be on the safe side. |
