Puppies with white flakes cant get rid of HELP!! I have a litter of 4 babies that are 9 weeks old and are getting white flakey stuff like dandruff all over them. They were scratching and I took them to the vet no fleas ticks or mange. All they say is dry skin. I cant believe it. The mother has also lost most of her hair and has a oily feel to her skin, once again the vet says nothing to worry about. Has anyone ever had this in there dogs? I have bought every kind of shampoos and sprays but the flakes are getting totally out of control. HELP PLEASE!!! |
Wow, I have no idea. How often are you bathing them? How soon did you start? I would probably get a second opinion from a different vet! Did you change food recently or anything? |
About half the litters I have, have had the same thing. It seems when its cold it gets worse. A litter I had last winter was terrible. I took that litter to the vets and he said the same thing yours did, just dry skin, use some oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. It was awful though, but none of my customers ever told me of any trouble with them later on so it does clear up. The 2 litters I have now have a little bit of flakes but not bad. Also, some of my mom's lose a little bit of their hair after babies. I believe its hormonal. |
Marcus Aurelius had this problem really bad when he was a little younger. Our vet couldn't put him on a medicated shampoo because he is too small. She put him on "hydra pearls mist". I just misted him down to complete wetness and let it dry (while he was in a blanket) twice a day and it really worked. Hope this helps! |
Sounds like rabbit fur mites, I used ivomec or dipped with Paramite. By the way this is my first post, been lurking for a while. Marita |
I have never heard of this. Is this medicine safe for 7-9 week old pups? How do they get the mites? My vet said he thought mine was just dry skin and it did clear up after I used oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. Curious |
It is also called WALKING DANDRUFF, make sure and medicate the mother also. Google rabbit four mites and see what it tells you. Marita |
I would look into demodex, it can cause the hairloss you are describing as well as the oily/greasy skin. If it is this condition it could also be passed on to the litter, first signs are usually lots of dandruff. It can be missed several times and test can come up negative even though they may be positive. Keep in mind not to dismiss the possibilty even if a Vet skin scrape shows up negative. With that being said I do hope it is just dry skin but would look more into this with the mother having a skin issue as well. |
puppies Have a skin scrapping done for walking dandruff....they have all the symptoms...treat every dog and area... |
