kneecaps??? hi, just wondered if any of you have had babies that have popped their knee cap out. mickey was playing with his sister bella yesterday and they were chasing each other and jumping on and off of my bed ( which they have done loads of times) and all looked ok, then mickey started limping so i panicked (as usual:rolleyes: ) and my husband checked his leg which mickey let us do and he didnt seem to be in pain. i made appt at vet that afternoon and they said he had popped his knee cap out and it is common for this to happen to yorkies. he got pain killer injection and i had to take him back today and the vet said the swelling is down and hes much better. just got to give him pain killer drops in food over weekend and take him back monday for check up. he is doing ok and even tho i am trying to get him to take it easy he is running around like mad again:rolleyes: . vet said when he is older he might need bit bone shaved off his knee so his knee cap stays in. just wondered if any of you had experiance of this. thanks x |
i'm not sure if this is the same thing as a luxating patella which is a slipped knee cap. There are various stages of this 1-4. It is when their knee caps slip out of place and dont' come back on their own... in stage 1 (Layla has stage 1) they will pop back on their own however many people on here have had dogs who get to stage 3 and 4 and they need surgery to fix this. |
the vet said that mickeys kneecap slips in and out and that his knee is weak. he is doing ok tho but think same thing might happen again.thank you :thumbup: |
Sounds like LP to me. He may be fine, or it may happen again. Get some supplements to give him daily to help with his ligaments. Here is a thread just the other day about LP: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99569 |
i asked the vet about supplements and she said when he is bit older i can. he is 6mth old so hopefully he will be ok. thinking he will need something done when he is a bigger boy tho :rolleyes: |
Please have him check regularly by a Vet for the LP LP doesn't fix itself. There are 4 Grades of LP with Grade 4 being the worst. Surgery will stablize the luxation and IMO surgery is needed for Grade 3 and Grade 4. I would ONLY have an Ortho Specialist do the surgery though. Just remember that the constant luxation is slowly wearing away the cartiledge and that can never be replaced and than you will have bone rubbing on bone - that must be painful. When he is old enough, get some supplements - Oh and NO more jumping off the bed or couch - Get a ramp, they are very easy on the knees :p ...anway 6 months is young, he may be ok or he may start to limp more often. Just monitor him. Also, next time you are at the Vet, ask him to show you how to gently glide the knee cap back into place ;) in case it ever gets stuck out. :) |
thankyou i will do that. its such a worry. just glad he is ok for now. i will have a look online for a ramp. thats a great idea:) . not sure off hand where i would get one but i will google it. thanks again x |
My bed is high so I don't have a ramp there and NO ONE even attempts to jump on or off. I did get a ramp (actually 3) for my couches. I got them from Ebay. Search for Foam Ramp - it's like $30 (including shipping). It's foam and I covered it with fabric. I love these! Best of Luck |
