Badly broken leg - needed surgery. My 4 month old yorkie broke her leg 2 weeks ago. She has a Y fracture which basicly means she blew out her knee. When we took her to the vet we were told that he could send here to an ortopidic specialist to try and repair the brake but it would be exspensive. We were told 1500-2000 and there would only be a 25% chance it would fix her leg. The vet sugested we just put a cast on her leg than in two weeks we check the leg again. So we put the cast on and waited the two weeks. When we went back to the vet he said the cast wasnt helping at all and that our only option would be to go to the specialist. We called the specialist to setup the operation and he said there was nothing he could do, that he would have had to have done somthing in the first day or two of the break. So now im kind of freaking out.... The specialist is telling me we should take off the cast and see what happens but the vet is telling me that the bone is just floating around. Anyone have any sugestions other than to find a new vet? |
Personally I would have gotten her to the specialist ASAP!!! I dont trust vets when it comes to bones. A specialist is really the only one who can fix such a bad break. Sorry you didnt get her to the specialist right away. Heres to hoping she can get the treatment and help that she needs to be able to walk again. Prayers to you and your little baby girl. |
1 Attachment(s) prayers to your aby. Koda broke his growth plate when he was aboout 3 mos old. They casted it for 6 weeks and thats it. He has days when it bothers him and he will favor it, but not to often. Good luck:) Hre is my Koda with his cast |
I would think the vet should have known that if you waited to go to the specialist that the break would be too old to repair. So he said he souldn't fix it ...what options are you being given? I certainly wouldn't just leave him without the cast as if nothing else I would think that would leave him in a lot of pain. You said suggesstions besides finding another vet but at this point I don't see any other option but to find another vet. Doesn't seem like you are being given any proper options with the vet and specialist you have already talked to. Poor baby, my thoughts and prayers for her healing. :( |
Oh that poor baby, Im so sorry to hear this, I would try a new specialist. Keeping him in my thoughts and prayers. |
ok i don't believe either yet. Yes the break is 2 weeks old now which is bad, but the orthopedic surgeon should be able to do something. I work for one and we would not have sent you away without doing something. You said your dog has a Y fracture. I'm assuming you mean a Intercondylar fracture of the elbow joint. These are fixable. Its a 30 minute surgery for my vet if its a new fracture. your vet should have told you to go to the specialist right away. casting does not help this because its a joint fracture. I'd definately go to a different orthopedic surgeon. SOmething needs to be done for your pup. it cannot just be left alone. i cant' believe these two vets..... |
I totally agree with Kalina. I would see a different orthopedist asap. |
The specialist told you to "take off the cast and see what happens"? That makes no sense what so ever. You need to take her to a new specialist ASAP. |
Poor baby, I hope you find a new vet and fast, I hope he is not in pain:( |
PLEASE Go to another Ortho Specialist ASAP |
I'd try calling another specialist. Prayers are going your way. |
Poor baby and poor you being sent all over the place with no results. Find a new specialist and certainly find a new vet. Good luck to you and your furbaby. I certainly hope something can be done to help. |
