Is this normal? Hello everyone. I am new to the forum, and new to yorkshires. I have owned all types of canine's in my life. From strays as a child to dalmatians, cocker spaniels, springer spaniels as an adult. But we bought a Yorkie just last Wednesday night he wouldnt eat much, twice a day on thursday, friday and saturday. Then on sunday he wouldnt eat all day and just laid around. He has vomited everyday. So we took him to the vet today and the vet believes that it worms but acording to his records he was dewormed 3 times. The breeder did not give him his 16 weeks vacination. And I am worried about parvo. He has ate today but I dont know how good because I am used to medium to larger dogs that eat whenever and whatever you put in front of them. Also he has some nasty gas. My questions are is how much should my 5 month old puppy eat and is it normal for them to have gas. It seems that when we take him outside to run he is fine and explores like a normal puppy. The breeders had a doggy door which allowed them access to the outside anytime, but I live in a rural area and I am afraid that hawks could take him. Any advice would be appreciated. |
I would be worried but Im a worry wort. As for how much food my Tank is 2lbs and only eats 4 tablespoons throughout the day. It seemed like a tiny bit to me but hes very healthy. Good luck with the pup and let us know how hes doing. |
guess I should have said he is 5 months and is 6 pounds. |
have you tried giving him some NutriCal puppy? that is very nutricious and sometimes helps get their appetites going. |
if you don't have nutrical, you can also use karo syrup and also honey..yorkie puppies really dont eat much.. |
Thanks to everyone. He seems to be doing good since the kids got home. Playing fetch with his toy and all. He does have earmites in one of his ears and me and my wife gave him his pills and medication for his ear. He just seems to be moody. You have to stand there with him while he eats and it is just one piece at a time, he takes a couple of pieces from the bowl walks about 3 feet dumps it on the carpet and eats them and goes back for more. If you leave the room he follows you. |

She loves when I feed her. At 5 months she eats about 2/3 of cups of dry food and I add one tablespoon of canned food. She is on a special diet! But she always had a good appetite :) Your pup is probably getting use to your environment. With love and care things are going to come back to normal. I assume at 6 pounds he should eat between 1/2 a cup to 2/3 a cup of dry food. |
Welcome to YT. I'd try the nutrical, and if that doesn't work I'd give your vet a call. |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks Pokche, my wife forgot to ask the vet about how much he should eat. Is that 1/2 - 2/3 at a time or all day long? I figured that he was still getting used to us and his new home. He is just more active when we take him outside and the least little noise scares him. For instance other dogs on the road cars driving by sudden noises a car door. Inside he just follows us around until we set down then he will lay down as well. Last night I was watching television in the living room my wife watching television in the computer room, he couldnt figure out which room he should be in and kept walking from one room to the other. I just expected a more wiry, and active puppy from the video's I seen on youtube. Perhaps it is just him still adjusting, I will most likely wish he was like he is now after he adjust. But it will be nice to hear him bark. I have heard this twice. I have attached a picture of him, hopefully it worked. |
oh good it worked |
He sure is cute :) |

What food do you give him? On the bag they usually tell you the portion they need. If not you can usually find it on the internet! Bikini follows me everywhere and she sleeps uder me when I cook or standing up. She will lay beside my boyfriend on the couch (because I tend to bug her too much if she lay beside me ;) ) Yorkie's need a lot of affection and attention. The easily feel insecure. That is normal that he follows you around ;) They are like babies. They want to be where mommy and daddy are. I have 2 kids, one is 11 months and the other 3.They are always where I am. Even sometimes I sit on the toilet and I have the dog and 2 kids after me... my husband is always amaze how its hard for me to be alone ;) The first time I brought Bikini home she panic outside ;) Once in the house she was more shy but days after days it got better :) They are a wonderful breed, an any advice you need YorkieTalkers will be there :) Is he still vomitinG |
Doesn't it depend on what kind of food you feed the amount the dog gets throughout the day? And base it on the pups activity level, spread out over 4 to 5 small meals. Not all food requires that amount on a daily basis. Try mixing a little warm water or a drop of moist food to entice him to eat. Your baby is beautiful, he is still adjusting to his new surroundings. Good Luck! |
No he is not vomiting and his stool is firmer. But he only did #2 once today and not at all yesterday. And he is starting to hop around when I come home from work. He really is a pretty pup, the breeder lives about 2 hrs away from me and I had here email a picture of him and we fell in love with him and I went the next evening and got him. He needs a trim on his paws and ears but I am going to wait until he feels better. |
