Does your Yorkie have genetic problems? There's a post going around about someone who decided not to get a Yorkie because she is convinced most of them have genetic problems. Well, she had some other good reasons, too, but I thought it would be interesting to do a poll to see how many of us own Yorkies with genetic problems. What qualifies as a genetic problem? LP, liver shunt, for sure. Anything else of a serious nature. Answer as many of these that apply, i.e., you might say you have 2 Yorkies with genetic problems and 1 without, etc. |
I voted one Yorkie with no problems but she's only 8 mos old so who knows what could happen down the road as she gets older but knock on wood - she's very healthy. |
Most breeders do not necessarily consider LPs (luxating patellas) as a genetic problem since most LPs come from environmental issues. I've read many contracts from different breeders and many do not cover this issue. Now, if a 12 week old pup already has LPs, then yes, I'd say it's genetic...how many 12 week old pups are jumping off of couches or beds, etc. If a dog is discovered to have LPs, one thing the owner can do is have x-rays done. The vet can determine if it's from environmental issues or if it was hereditary. Now, LPs (leg perthes) is a whole different issue. |

Neither of mine do, so far so good! |
It's 57-12 for no genetic problems right now. Not too bad. |
I have two yorkies and while neither have the genetic defects listed, my oldest Sedrick has a congenital defect that is common to toy breeds. He has AAS (atlanto-axial subluxation) In laymans terms he was born without the dens between the C1 C2 vertebrae and suffered a "broken neck" at 7 months of age. Most pups that have this start off with AAI (instability and not subluxation) and can now be treated with surgery with phenomenal success. This is the same defect that affects Val and Babybear who are members of YT as well. Lorraine and the MonkeyBoys Sedrick and Doogan |
Lacy's genetic issue is Luxating patella but so far it hasn't caused her any pain or anything. I'm hoping she'll never need surgery. |
Miko has genetic liver problems and has had luxating patellas since we got him, but they don't cause him discomfort or pain, thank goodness... |
