Breeder Poll - do you assist? I'm just curious as to what everyones regimin is during whelping. Do you help, or do you let them do everything/ Or do you do everything for them. Also - why do you and why do you not help? Just looking for everyones opinions and different ways of doing things :) |
I assist on everything but maybe I need to give them a chance to see if they can do it right by themselves. I am sure they can but I just get to nervous. |
all I allow mommy to do is push it out then sshe gets to eat the placenta. I take the sac off, cord the cord, aspirate, dry puppy off and anything elsse that needs to be done. it is too risky taking a chance on mama being too slow and the little one dying. |
I would think helping would also take some of the load off of mom to make sure she doesn't tire as fast, Especially in larger litters. I'm just curious to hear all the different sides and stories. |
I let mom push the babies out and eat 1 placenta, then I do the rest. It helps her from getting to tired and it assures me the cords are cut to a proper length and they are breathing well on their own. I don't like to wait for mom to take the sac off since I'm always afraid she will take to long and something might happen to the pup(I'm not a big risk taker). Only after the puppies have been completely checked do I give him/her back to mom so they can immediately start to nurse. |
I'm hands on in every aspect from mating to delivery. Mating time I set in the floor with mine and hold until tie is broken. My boys are funny when they see me get the blanket out they know what going on..:) Whelping time I've pulled stuck pups, revived lifeless pups, I remove the sacs, cut cords, aspirate, dry puppies off, work getting them to latch on....etc I try not to let the mom eat the placentas but every now and then she is quicker then I am...;) |

I do the same as most of you. When one of my girls are delivering, I'll help a stuck puppy out, cut the cord, dry off a new pup with a wrung out damp warm towel, gently suck on the nose of a lifeless little pup to get the fluid moving, or blow into the mouth, or work one over, whatever i need to do to hear that first little squeak! As far as breeding, my boys know what it means when i get ready to put 1,2 or 3 =) towels on the floor....they know one of the girls are coming in to visit. They get all beside themselves until she shows. They are all so sweet and eager to please. |
I like to assist, especially with the cord. Usually! My last litter my girl waited to have babies until I was to sleepy to stay awake any longer. SHe had had puppies before. GUess what? She did fine without me. I truly beleive she was plain sick of my smothering and waited on purpose.:animal36 :p |
Chuck & I are right there with our hands on everything. It works out real well. |
