Is it okay for strangers to pick up your yorkie? Just wondering if anyone else had an issue with complete strangers(like at petsmart, neighborhood, dog park, etc.) picking your yorkie up without even asking!!! Am I being paranoid? I hate it!! How do they know they won't drop the dog?!? What if I picked their child up without asking!! Am I crazy?!? Just wondering how everyone else felt about this. |
I marked YES but with a stipulation. Most of us kind of get a feel for the person asking (they better ask!), if I can tell they are accustomed to being around animals then I'm ok with it. I just show the person know the way my Jazzie likes to be held. I prefer to have her straddle the person's forearm with the palm on her chest. Any other way and she is uncomfortable and that can lead to a fall. With younger children, I ask them to sit and place Jazzie in her lap. If I get a bad vibe I just let the person know politely that they can pet her but I prefer to hold her. |

I think it's rude. Would I go up to a stranger's 100-pound lab and pick him up? The person would probably whack me over the head with a stick. But it's hard for me to enforce it. I was walking the boys today, and Jack was lagging behind. I watched a little girl walk up to him and pick him up. My instinct was to shout at her not to do it, but I walked over and politely asked her to put him down because he has a bad leg. It's a tough call, but what are you going to do? |

I agree, you can't really yell at the person not to pick up your dog. For some odd reason, people pick up Fergie like she is just a stuffed animal. I don't get it? She will be walking around on her leash, and people will automatically pick her up because she looks so friendly. WHY won't they ask me if they can hold her?!? It makes me want to make up an excuse like "You better not pick her up, she pees all over people when she is excited", that might deter them:) |

And Corinne, I didn't have to pick up the husky. She was so sweet, she jumped right in the car when I asked her to. I'm halfway hoping the owner doesn't claim her so I can adopt her. I can't believe I just said that. |

I do not let peole pick Cali up I explain that she is a leaper and I can't take the chance. My dtr's lucky I let her pick her up. I told the groomer when I took her there a couple of weeks ago that she will leap out of your arms and she thanked me for warning her. It just happens too quick for them to fall or jump. I won't take the chance. I try not to carry Cali too much myself. |
Wow, I’m surprised at how many people find it rude. I guess I’ve never really thought about it….Ginger is very loving, so when people come in my office she is all over them with kisses, trying to get their attention. Almost everyone picks her up and gives her some love back, so when they don’t I think it’s a little… rude. I mean…here she is putting her heart on her sleeve and they can’t even acknowledge her? Lol. :p |
I wouldn't go up to someone and just pick up their kid or start playing with their baby without asking so why is it any different? I don't like people to pick her up without asking. I don't mind people petting her without asking but not picking her up. A few have tried and I've had to ask them not to because she's wiggly and I don't want anyone picking her up. People are usually understanding though. |
I would flip out if someone picked up my dog... Tucker might not react well..., and Tripp would try to fly out of their arms! That is just asking for trouble if someone assumes they can hold a strange dog... |
so far, everyone that picks up my Tiger or pets him always asks . . . so yes, I definitely want to be asked first. Tiger is a people person . . . if he is ignored in public, he is very well behaved. But the minute someone comments about him, somehow he knows it so he starts to wiggle his way wanting to be petted and carried so they always say "may I" and I say "yes please" otherwise he becomes "uncontrollable" and won't ever stop getting excited . . . |
yes, i let them pickup lexi only if they are careful and i am right there.. lexi is very lovable how can i say no |
I don't think strangers should pick up your dog unless they ask and are allowed to. I don't let people I don't know hold any of my dogs. I am very uneasy if someone wants to hold my dog and I don't know them. How do you know they aren't gonna take off with your dog? |
