Not Housebroken Yet? If your dog is older than 6 months & not yet housebroken (defined as more than 1 accident a week), where are you trying to teach your pup to potty? |
I have a doggie door that mine go in and out of. |
outside and the pads. when we're at home we take him outside. but when he's home and we're not he usually will go on the pad. |
Mason Mason is 1yr old and trained KINDA to pee outside and on pee pads when we are not home or at night when we sleep. HOWEVER, Mason has NEVER Pooed outside Ok, one time but that was an accident. Can you believe this????????? |
I have been training Gizmo to potty outside, unless we have to go somewhere and he can't come. Then we leave atleast one pee pad down, sometimes two of them. |
My Tonee is 1yr old and still having more accidents inside than she should. She has been very hard to potty train. We take her outside. We tried over and over to use pads, one day she would go on it and the next day she would go all around it. She is very stuborn though.... |
potty training i am so glad other people are having the same problem i am, i just thought it was me :( my boy Harley is so bad, he goes everywhere, i have to keep him gated in the kitchen, i take him outside at lunch time and when i get home from work, he goes on the pee pads (when he feels like it) i do correct him when i catch him going to the bathroom where he is not allowed. i tried sprays and everything. i guess i just have to keep on my toes with him until he is trained. My little girl Haley was so easy to train, my little baby doll :) |
Funny this has come up. I just asked my vet today about it and he says my 5 month olds should be potty trained. They use the paper most of the time and my boy always goes outside when I take him out. My girl is slower to do that but she will given time. I felt awful until I read this. I am so glad I am not the only one having trouble. Sam and Dees mom. |

I know there are differing opinions on this, but my vet frowned when I told him we were using pee pads and taking her outside as well. He said it's hard to train them to pads and then transition them to go outside exclusively. He suggested crate training; no pads. Because of our schedules we are able to do this without leaving her for extended periods of time. The only time she has run of the house is when we can keep a constant eye on her. She is doing very well, and of course has accidents (or should I say we have the accidents by not watching her close enough), but then she is only 13 weeks old. Just thought I would throw this out for consideration. |
As I mentioned on another thread, yesterday we started "tethering" Missy to US. She goes everywhere I go in the house. I have this little pad on the floor beside me and she lays on it and goes right to sleep. We're trying to stretch out her bladder during the day. She isn't let "loose" on her own anywhere in the house now! The dog trainer said it was a greatttttt idea! Good luck everybody! |
My little Sadie Mae is 2yrs old..I have been using pee pads since I got her. She will use them most of the time but she also uses the rugs, floor, anywhere she wants...and for poop....she has been doing alot better going on the pads but she will still go where she wants. She has even pooped on my bed!! Ya...my husband really liked that one! lol I have talked to alot of yorkie owners and I hate to say this but,,,,,they all say the same thing...Yorkies are very difficult to house train. One yorkie owner's little one is 14 years old and still not house broken...but, I love my little Sadie....I will be getting her a little playmate this year. All I can say is THANK GOD the aren't St. Bernards! |
Luna was pee pad trained for the first 4 months we had her then she had some bad influences and now mostly uses the peepads but sometimes she just squats wherever she wants to i am hoping its just a faze she is 8 months old |
Missy did good yesterday as I "tethered" her to ME. She went 3-4 hours at a time. We're trying hard to "stretch" that bladder so she can keep going longer between "pit stops"! She goes ALL night without going out anymore. She sleeps from about 9-5 am. That's 8 hours - that's pretty darn good for 14 weeks old, so I think. |
Precious will pee on her pads if I take her there or if they are in sight, otherwise it's the floor! She also pops anywhere she wants....lucky for me I find surprises everywhere! Yuckyyy |
we' ll think tonee has been doing good for a bit, then we will find nice little gifts under a bed, that is her favorite place to go, we have to keep the bedroom doors closed, but the children forget so we have to check under beds everyday. this gets old, i also read that this breed was very hard to potty train, but i did not think it would drag on this long. we finally got our fencing replaced after the hurricanes, and she is starting to do better, she can run around a bit and then has to go. |

My first yorkie took me 2 years and I trained her to use the balcony. (I did feel bad for the neighbor but I kept up with it) She would still have lots of accidents though. My husband and I are with the State Dept (We bought her in Vienna) and one day I caught her PEEING on the BACK of the Couch. I could not believe it. It was the second time judging by the other stain. I admit I lost my temper and spanked her and yelled. I felf horrible after but you know what? She never did anything in the house again unless she was sick. She could pee on command. Which is very helpful when you are flying overseas. She was just a sweet and obedient girl. |
my scrappy goes outside and pee pad trained. |
I don't think Stomper would have been trained so quickly if it was not for the doggy door! It made our lives easier. He loves being mocho man going outside on his own! |
I have two small kennels in the house that I use as litter boxes. I line the inside with a piddle pad and shredded paper. They are small kennels, so I can easily move them from room to room, upstairs and downstairs, which I do to ensure my little guy always has it nearby. I also have a small bag of treats in every room, so that when I see him "go" inside the kennel I can immediately reward him with a treat and lots of praise. He's only 5 months right now, and is not lifting his leg yet, so I haven't started with outdoor training. Just like the male I previously owned, he just doesn't seem to get the whole "outside" thing at this age. We'd go outside and pretty much just stand there looking at each other. He wouldn't do anything, so there was no way for me to praise him, thus letting him know this is where he needs to go. It was pointless. Once he starts marking, I'll start taking him outside, so at least when we are out there there's a better chance he'll "go", enabling me to then reward him and reinforce the behavior. This worked for the male I had before, and seems to be going well with Huck as well. |
I think I voted too soon before reading your question. Kiki is fully potty trained and he is 9 months old. He makes a mistake every now and than only because I don't take him out on time. He loves to go outside. I even recently bought the Wiz Dog and he totally ignored it. |
Buddy was crate trained. I trained him for outside only. By five months he was fully trained. I have heard it can be very hard to train Yorkies so some take longer than others. However he is a larger Yorkie, 13.7lbs so maybe his bladder is larger and it was easier for him. |
I can totally understand why they would get confused as to when and where they can go potty. I was going to post this same topic poll. I trained my oldest 2 to go out side. It was really easy to do. but the younger 2, I wanted to try pee pads because of the fact when we had that hurricane last year (not much of one) my older 2 wanted to potty so bad and couldn't go out. I was begging them to potty in side and they wouldn't. switch, huh? I find it is not as easy to pee pad train. |
My Holly is doing ok outside, apart from when it rains! Then I discover 'presents' in the bedrooms! Sigh! |
my 4month old girl uses pads and goes outside. She is smart enough to know to hold it until we take her outside when we're home...and she's crated at night. But during the day, she goes in pads since we're not home all day. She's really good about holding it for a good 8 hours even though she's under 4lbs. Occasional accidents if we don't take her out on time or let her have free range of the house if we don't walk her prior. I can tell she tries to hold it until she can't anymore then drops the bombs. |
