No, I do not have set prices, per say. Although I've have only had one litter and have not had to 'avertise,' I start with a price slightly above the 'norm' in the area, assuming that potential millers and impulse buyers will go for the cheapest around. As already mentioned, should something happen with one of the pups, a health issue or something, I would alert anyone interested in the pup and adjust the price accordingly. Also, if I had one that was obviously going to be very tiny or something of that nature, I would probably have the pup altered before leaving my house and lower the price as well.

I also vary my prices for pups based on certain criteria. I have a couple of small ones, one about 3 lbs at mature size the other less. I am not charging anything for them. One is already placed with a friend that has the great grandmother to this one, the other will be placed with another friend that has a couple of mine. I am taking care of the spaying which they should be able to handle next month. The people that have them, are well versed on the risks of these little guys and know that they must Vet them if they become ill, you can't wait with these little guys. I had them blood tested and bile acid tested for shunt. They are both normal for things that can be tested but we still don't know if they are small just because they are small or if they are small due to a hormonal, glandular, enzymic or? problem. They may or may not have a normal life span.
I never purposely breed for small like this and I have no idea why this happened. But it is my responsibility to take on their care and I will not sell them as I am aware of the extra care and expense they may require because of their small size. These new owners spoke up for them, I placed one and will place the other but with the understanding that I will work with them for their care. They are also local to me so easy enough to help them when needed.
Most of my puppies will range from about 5 to 7 lbs with the occasional one going a bit oversized. My utmost interest for my puppies that I look for in pet homes, however, is whether or not the prospective buyer will be a good caring home for my pup. Buyers looking for a 'deal' I am not too interested in as the purchase price of a puppy is only a drop in the bucket in the continuing quality care of a puppy.
Such as, Veterinary care, good quality food, how much the owner is home or taking time to spend with that dog or puppy for the next 12 to 15 years. Do they realize the commitment goes beyond the cute puppy stage, beyond the time they are home for holidays. Are they willing to compromise their lives for the care of their dog such as getting up an hour earlier than necessary to spend time with their dog feeding, exercising, before they go to work, come straight home after work, spend as much time as they can with their dog.
If the dog or pup has an accident and breaks a leg, is the owner willing to pay $2000 and up for fixing it or whatever else can happen in the life of the dog. Is the new owner willing to forgo Christmas to Vet their dog that got sick when it got into Christmas chocolates? If the owner is required to go somewhere for a few days and can't take the dog, are they willing to pay for good care while they are gone or have someone that can safely look after their YOrkie. Do they have the patience for the sometime arduous task of housebreaking a Yorkie or is their home way more important? You would be amazed at the enquiries that think the Yorkie pup can live in the basement until it is housebroken once I advise them of the problems in housebreaking Toy Breeds.
I must interview and meet each prospective buyer and all members of the family still at home, before I will let them have a puppy and for that reason I never ship. I would rather refer them to a reputable breeder in their area for a puppy for them to meet, see their dogs, learn about the Yorkie, the breeder and decide if this is the right everything for them.

Lorraine~

Welcome to Yt!! You sound like just the type of experienced and conscientious breeder we like to hear from here. I am so glad you found us and hope you stick around. I look forward to more of your posts and maybe even pictures of your babies. Do you have a website?

Lorraine 01-02-2006 01:11 PM

Yes I do have a site http://loriben_yorkies.tripod.com/ and there are two pages of pictures, one page show pictures, the other family pictures. I never post pictures of any puppies for sale at any time. The pups there are either ones I have kept such as Matthew now Canadian Champion Loriben Call Me Irresistible and he has one pt in the US, and some I sold in the past. The pictures give a good idea of what my Yorkies look like. I also have info about me how I got started etc.
I don't have a camera that is working right now but want to get a digital hopefully soon. I don't have the time and patience much to learn how to use stuff like that properly and like stuff idiot proof which is hard to find these days. LOL I hve pictures that I can scan and send -- once I learn how to do that.

Thank you so much for sharing! Your babies are beautiful!! I love looking at show pictures as well as everyday, havin' fun pics. The ones of Liana doing both are just great!!!

Liana is a real sweety, She is cobbier ie shorter legged shorter backed, loved the dog shows and finished her Candian Championship in no time. She has two sons born in Sept and they are adorable. BUt she had to have a Csection so I am having her spayed next week, no more breeding for her. This was the only litter she had. Her dad is Frasier, Ch Loriben Crane Operator and her Grandmother is Danielle, Ch. Loriben Soar On Eagle Wings both are on my show page. Liana's mother was a female I had from a friend of mine, Maggie is also spayed and in a great forever pet home.

I do have a basic starting point for my babies. Is it set in stone no. Depends on each puppy and the person that I am working with. MY little pupppies usually sale for much less then a puppy for show and breeding. I have gave a discount to good clients who have purchased more then one puppy from me.
Each breeder has a ball park Idea of how much it cost to get that baby to 12-16 weeks of age and the care and costs incurred-C-section, Vet fees, food- registration- stud fees and etc.

I had a very nice baby this summer- who came down with ingestable pneumonia. Some how chocked on something and went down into the lungs.
Never had this happen before. Little gal was sold and scheduled to go to her new mom in 4 weeks. I spent close to $2,000.00 getting this kid healthy. Had her sold for $1,500.00. Gave the client the puppy out of the litter that I was keeping to show myself. Took this little gal and had her spayed and GAVE HER AWAY. I was worried that down the road she could have problems and did not want to take a chance. Found a wonderful home with a family who wanted her and I felt would take great care of her if anything showed up in the future.

I do not increase the price of puppies in a litter to make up for expenses that one puppy has above and beyond the rest. I am glad to come out ahead- sometimes I do- sometimes I don't. When I do come out ahead it is reinvested back into the dogs for showing, purchasing more stock and all the expenses that it costs to keep the dogs in good health.

Hi wow I went out for the afternoon and came back to such a warm welcome. Well, back to the thread about puppy prices and by the way, Cora is a full litter sister to Matthew and both are my pride and joy.
Anyway, on my pricesfor pet, I do not charge accordingly to what producing a litter might cost. I do not consider cost of csection if necessary, stud fees for which ever male I have used, or other factors. My purpose for breeding as a purebred fancier of the YOrkie is to try to produce a show dog for me. That doesn't always work out as I think it might in any mating so anything I have for sale for pet is something I decided won't contribute to my breeding plan for show quality and thus the betterment of the breed. I consider showing/breeding to be my hobby, my responsibility and out of it, I hope I can offer some pretty nice pet puppies to people who want a nice Yorkie pet.
When I sell a pup it is for pet under nonbreeding spay/neuter contracts. If I don't think it is worthy to pass on its genes to future generations, I am not going to let anyone else do that with my dog. I look at my dogs comparing to both the breed standard as well as what I have learned about the Yorkie from being in both the AKC and Canadian Kennel Club show rings and being among some of the breeders that have produced some of the best Yorkies I have seen.
Yep I consider Pat of Primrose Yorkies a friend of mine, didn't realize she was on this chat group and I am happy enough to be here also. I hope I can contribute and learn as well. I have been in this about 10 years now and I consider myself to be very new at it and have lots to learn.

Lorraine, your knowledge and thoughts are much appreciated by me! I'm so looking forward to learning more about your experiences and hopefully working with folks like you and many others to better my program. Thanks for taking the time to tell us about your yorkies and your views. I for one, am as hungry as they come in the yorkie world! I'm soaking in knowledge, I'm gaining experience with the actual whelping of pups; have made mistakes but always trying to do better.. am learning my standard inside and out, and I've aquired my taste for the "type" of yorkie that tickles my fancy. Hope I don't sound silly here, but yorkies are really all I know.
You are a breath of fresh air in our little communtity! :) :) :)
So glad to have you.. and Pat,,, well.. she's just priceless!
