How Do you Care for Your Pup's Teeth?
 
I thought it would be interesting to see, in graph form, how we as a community are caring for our Pup's teeth.

Bought the Sonic care and was really hoping it would work. My girls FREAK OUT! So I am back to the good ole manual brush!

I use an Oral B electric toothbrush on Bogie...Jada goes bonkers with it and I have a hard time even with a manual for her. I use the CET fingertip tiny brush on her.

I use infant toothbrushes! Brody lovessssss getting his teeth brush (thank goodness, his back teeth are nasty :eek:). Sophia isn't as fond, but she's learning :thumbup:

Neither of them will let you use it? Curri hates it but she is now letting me do a full 2 minutes with the Sonicare turned OFF and another 30 seconds with it turned ON :winky:

The lady that I took Morgan to for his obedience class said to put the toothbrush on your finger and rub it on his teeth

Only 4 of us so far use Sonicare or other battery operated toothbrush. I thought it would be a little higher....

Believe it or not Uni used to brush her own teeth. Now not so much. =/ We used to put toothpaste on those double ended brushes and she's just sit there and chomp on it like a bully stick. When the brush go gross we'd just get her a new one. She doesn't like it anymore. I thought she got sick of the toothpaste, so Iswitched it up. Now we use CET chicken flavor, she tolerates it. And I use the tiny fingertip brush. Not the one that looks like a thimble and is soft rubber, that thing she thinks is a toy. The one that actually looks like a regular toothbrush but just tiny.
I also use Petzlife spray. Uni is 5 and has never had a dental. Her last vet visit they said her teeth still look great, and I am not that good about brushing her teeth. I really think the spray works.
Scraps hates them all.

Is the water additive even safe? I remember getting a sample pack of the CET aquadent or whatever and someone warned me not to use it. Does anyone use it?

I personally am not comfortable with them but many use water additives. You want to make sure the one you use does not have alcohol and xylitol (think that's how its spelled) in it.

I use the Tropiclean gel, I think its called, and it really helps. My vet said I could try it and kinda hooted at it, but it does work. I also like to use the finger brushes or pads. Alot easier on mine than the brushes. They are all stuborn when it comes to their teeth, nails and ears. ugh!!!

You forgot one check box :) -- using the right kind of chews to do the job that nature should do for doggies. That's what I use. My babies haven't needed a dental so far - they are 8, 6, and 2. Knock on wood.

I don't brush their teeth - instead I use bully sticks and Jack gets a Dentastix and when their breath gets stinky from the bully sticks, they get a dose of Tropiclean. Jack is 3 and has not had any problems - each vet visit has been good as are as his dentals go:thumbup: :D

Yay!! It's all in the genes. My Sugar had her first dental at 21 months ( before I got her) at already lost 4 teeth. She lost an additional 6 teeth a year later :( but so far has't lost any in 2 years since we started her Sonicare dental routine.

I really think it's in the genes also. Uni is 5 and hasn't ever had a dental. I'm not even that good with brushing her teeth. But last month, the last time we went to see the vet, she said her teeth looked great. :D She only had one extraction, which was the baby canine that never came out. She did have tartar between the two canines and since it's been out, her teeth have been pretty white. Can't say the same about mine. :rolleyes:

What I really meant is the right kind of chews for your dog, bc your dog has to like them...and want to really gnaw and scrape at them. We use raw non-consumbable bones (mostly Bison back), CET (about 3 kinds), and 3-4 other kinds we get at the pet food boutique (like the organic/wheat free etc ones). The raw ones seem to be giving them the most benefit - bc once the meat is gone, they scrape nice and good. We get the bison bones at Whole Foods and have the butcher cut them in 1/3rds, so each rib usually gives about 3 servings (so we end up w/ a total of around 20 raw bones for about $8 or so.

Zipp(Spike) had a full set of teeth at 17 1/2 years old and he still knew how to use them when He died 6/28/12.:cry:

Where do you get the very small finger brushes. I wipe their faces w/a wash cloth and finger brush their teeth 2X a day.

We might have to try these... Bison back? I'll be stopping by the butcher today :)
