When Was Your Yorkie Housebroken? Given the number of threads about the difficulty of housebreaking Yorkies, I'm curious at what age was your Yorkie housebroken? I'll make it multiple answer so that you can respond for more than 1 dog. For the purposes of this poll, let's define housebroken as 95 - 100% compliance with your chosen method. |
Another good question! I don't know how we did it, but Eddie was in 90 percent compliance at 6 months, and he's been 100 percent since 9. The only 'secret' I can think of is someone was home 24-7 to watch him and let him out when he needed. |

Teddy was completely house broke by 6 months but as Mike said I was also here with him 24/7. |
Another interesting question to go with the age of housebreaking would be what size is your Yorkie. Perhaps the tiny ones are harder to housebreak. Joey was fully trained at 4 months. He's on the bigger side, though. At 6 1/2 months, he weighs 9 pounds! |
Lilly just turned 4 months this week and she is house broken, my husband am I were usually home with her, If I wasn't home, he was and vice versa. I was amazed at how fast she cought on |

That is interesting. Lilly is 4 months and 2 lbs. |
I didn't use the poll, becasue I have three. Bell almost 3 is trained and was trained around 5-6 months old but always had accidents whne he was in heat. Lilly is almosr 6 months old and is almost completly trained( uses the wee wee pads) and then there is Petey??!!?? Doesn't have a clue, and he is almost 5 months old!! EEK!! ( I think its a boy thing!!) |
Mollie was easily housebroken at 4- 6 months. We are almost there with Wyatt at 4 1/2 months. He still has an accident 1 -2 times a week. More if it is raining outside. He will just stand on the porch and scratch at the door until I let him in. Mollie doesn't care much for going out in the rain either but, I make her go out and she will go on out in the yard and do her business. I make Wyatt go with her, sometimes he will go in the yard with her and sometimes he won't. Luckily we have ceramic tile floors so it's not that difficult to keep clean. |
Magic was pretty easy to house trained...she was fully trained at about 6 months but would sometimes forget and have accidents....Sailor was much harder and took probably until she was about 9 months but once we got a doggie door both girls have done great with very few accidents!!! |

Hmmmm...That's very interesting on the size - I needed to vote 2 times - but Chanel is bigger and was trained completely in less than a month - more like 2 weeks actually - Then Cheri, who is smaller, took 10 LONG months ! |
i have to say, lexi is trained at 8 months.. after this weekend , she was so good, i mean she had her playdate and her playdate went potty on the rug and my lexi went right to her pee pad...she just might have the run of the house very shorty... |
I do wonder if size does play a part because I had heard before I got Roxie how difficult it is to housebreak a Yorkie. Most of us grew up with dogs and ours have all been larger and I swear it only took a few weeks. Maybe the smaller the bladder, the more often they have to go? Roxie will be a year old in 2 1/2 weeks and weighs 6.5 lbs. She was 95% done by 5 months and has been completely 100% by 7 months. She can hold it a long time though! Interesting thought? |
