How many commands does your Yorkie know? Dogs understand us in so many ways. This is partly because they come to know a large vocabulary of human words and commands. One study showed over a three year period that a Border Collie learned 1,022 words. The researchers believed the dog could have learned more, but they had to end the study. How many commands does your Yorkie know? How many total words do you think your Yorkie understands? I think their potential to learn vocabulary is infinite. What do you think? |
mine understand 3...sit, stay and down,,,,These little ones have mines of their own,,.,LOL |
Morgan has a mind of his own so it sometimes it is a challenge |
Rocco can do sit, come, and sometimes stay!!! oh yeah and give kisses!!!:) |
By the end of obedience school Mishka will know these basic commands (not in order). She doesn't start her classes until this weekend and she already knows a few of them: 1. Sit 2. Stay 3. Down 4. Come (She's already got this one down pat) 5. Yes (She knows this means she did good and gets a treat!) 6. Settle 7. Release 8. Leave it 9. Let's go 10. Easy 11. Hurry 12. Crate (She knows it, still working on her obeying every time) 13. Look (She's starting to figure this one out) 14. Heel Here are the advanced commands I hope to teach her for fun: 15. Up 16. Fetch 17. Spin 18. Step 19. Place (not for fun, but I consider it advanced) 20. Paw |
Definitely over 45. I'd have to sit and think real hard to try and remember them all though! lol. Besides tricks and commands, he knows a ton of every day words.... sometimes it's scary having a smart dog! He's too smart for his own good. |
It's surprising what they pick up on sometimes. Penny knows that "kitty" means any cat, not just a specific cat. My Mom's poodle, Bobo, knows that "ball" and "stick" mean any ball or stick. They recognize routes we take in the car. They even know what "vacation" means, despite only having been on vacation with us twice. They know the names of every family member and if you ask "Where's Christina?" they will start looking for the person you ask for. We've even seen simple tool use with Bobo. One time he had an ice cube that kept getting away. I saw a thought gleam in his eyes. He picked up the ice cube, trotted into a room with a low windowsill and placed the ice cube on the windowsill. He pushed the ice cube into the corner of the sill with his nose so it would finally hold still while he licked it! He was so proud of himself. |
Lil' Miss Izzie knows alot....it's funny how they understand exactly what you are saying to them... :) |
Oh my sweet Georgie he knows 2...sit and come LOL. I am impressed by everyone elses furbabies that know so many:thumbup: I almost forgot the 3rd one he knows LOOK when we say that he looks at the TV and barks at the dogs when they come on:) |
I have been surprised by the result of this poll so far. I didn't think there would be so many dogs that only know 3-5 tricks. I do understand though. A Yorkie can be really sweet and smart in other ways, and just not know many commands. Penny is 10 and she knows a lot of words, but she only knows a few commands: 1. Sit 2. Stay 3. Come 4. Roll-Over 5. Up |
Hmmmm...Toki only knows a handful sit down come stay roll over shake spin wait And of course she demands a treat/toy to perform these tricks (I'm pretty sure I was supposed to phase out the treats at some point but I usually use them) most of the time. When I ask her to do a trick without having a reward, Toki will act like she has no idea what I'm talking about or like she has never heard that word before. But once that treat comes out, she suddenly "remembers" how to roll-over or spin in circles ;) Toki also seems to respond the best to hand gestures. Man, I'd love to teach her more tricks though! |
Lilo knows about 50 commands and she just recently turned a year.. I'm excited to see what she'll know in a year or two from now :) these littles dogs can be amazing. There are some tricks that are harder for us to learn since she's only 2.2 pounds but we find our ways around them and figure out how to do it our own way .. |
I think Tibbe is at the 20-30 because we have been hampered in the last year by my various issues preventing more training but he learned a fair bit before that. Before surgery, was quite limited but we got to 26 or 27 probably. Some are only as simple as "Bite my finger, then kiss it" - things like that to give him simple things he can do in my lap or on the couch with me yet make him think. Then I'll have it kiss, bite, then kiss, kiss. On that last one, he has to kiss my finger, pause, then kiss again. Little tricks like that you can do just sitting around. Obviously the bite is just a play bite. |
My boys don't know many classic tricks because they are stuck on sitting to earn the treat. Seeing their little faces saying, "I'm sitting! I'm a good boy!" often prevents me from continuing to try to teach them. They do know a lot of basic life commands, too many to count. They know spelling and pig latin too. ;) The funniest is "back up" for car doors or the oven. One day at the park, standing next to a soccer field, when the coach started yelling "Back up!" to the players, Max and Teddy started walking backwards. It was so cute! My favorites are Max's refined handshake and kissing on command. Teddy always comes when called...even when I'm calling for Max. :p |
