Do/Would you use Xylitol containing water additives? The vet has offered us CET products as well as another brand I can't think of in the office to help Princess with her teeth. The problem is that brushing her teeth is like pulling teeth! And the chews, well, I'm just not comfortable giving them to her with her GI issues. So I looked at the water additives & sure enough they have xylitol. I'd assume this must be way under a toxic amount but really have no idea. So.... |
I wouldn't use any product on my furbabies that contains any amount of xylitol. My co-worker just lost her little chi a few months ago when she got into some gum her son had brought into the house. My DIL was the tech on call when she took her into the vet. They did everything they could to save her, but the xylitol had already done irreversable damage. My DIL said it is a very painful and horrible death. No way would I take that chance. I |
As for a rinse, I would look into Healthy Mouth. I have not tried it personally but it is recommended by the Veterinary Oral Health Council. It's also been through many clinical trials. I smear doggy toothpaste on my nekked finger and just smooth it over their teeth, then I use a gauze, then a Qtip, then I try the toothbrush. Toothpastes are enzymatic, so just getting it in their mouth will help their teeth. |
Not a chance would I give something so highly toxic. I use oravet and would consider maxi guard if needed. |
I bought the HealthyMouth gel - great company, definitely pricey though. I considered the water additive but wasn't sure Jackson would drink it so opted for the gel. I can't say I've seen a significant difference, because I started it after his professional cleaning... so they are still very shiny white. But I do use it once a week or so. He tolerates it well, but the tube is sooo tiny and for $60, it just seems like so little. :( |

On another site (actually a Facebook page for those that are interested in forcing a recall of chicken jerky from China) that CET chews are made in China. I don't have any, so I can't confirm that. If you decide to consider going with the CET chews, please confirm first that they aren't made in China. |
So when I went to the vet a while back I again asked about the CET water aid & the tech nearly had me sold saying it was such a tiny amount, blah, blah, blah.:confused: We went in for the exam, etc. & I thought about it & this is what my mind came up with: antifreeze probably wouldn't be deadly in my human child in tiny quantities. So would I give her a little if she could benefit from it?:eek: Absolutely not!!! Maybe not an accurate comparison, but it worked for me. I ended up buying a rinse that's xylitol free & Princess hates it:rolleyes:-all $28 of it!:eek: So we're trying brushing again & will see how it goes this time.:):aimeeyork |
xlitol xylitol: This substance gives ME instant diarrhea. Not a chance I would use it on my dogs. My breeder recommended PetzLife Oral Care Spray. You spray it into the mouth. I also give them knotted pieces of fleece as toys. They like to chew on these which acts like a soft tooth brush. They both have very nice teeth.
