Outdoors vs. Pee pads I have never used pee pads to housebreak only of my puppies/dogs. When Cozy had her puppies I started taking them outside at least every 2 hrs. once they where 4 weeks old. I did put down newspaper in the puppy area but did not encourage the usage of it. Once they were 8 weeks old I took the paper away. I have neurotic about taking them out because i knew i was keeping at least 1 puppy from each litter. Just wondering how many people use pee pads/paper train, outdoor only, or mix and match between the two. |
Your poll has Pee pads/paper trained twice :) First Yorkie, I just trained outdoors, and that's worked great. Second Yorkie, I pad trained first, then outdoors trained. She now uses the pad only if no one's home to let her out. Works great too. The only drawback is she will sometimes pee on something else on the floor that she might think is a pee pad, like a towel or bathmat. |

My dog is 9 months old and 100% potty trained to go inside on his pee grass. He will also go outside on walks but he is more comfortable inside. I have 3 patches that I wash alternately every day, I pick the poop up immediately, and he ALWAYS gets a treat, for being a good boy! It wasn't always like that. In the beginning we had a terrible time, nothing worked! He would wait til we came back from an hour walk and pee right in front of us. We tried picking him up and putting him on the pee pad. NOTHING WORKED. Then someone told me on here, PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE..so we tried that. and it worked Great. He loves the pee grass, its called pet zoom park. Hope that helps anyone trying to potty train. |
Mine have always used both pads and outside. I would start them on pads inside and move the pads to my garage. I use doorbells and train to go outside as the main potty spot. The only reason I also used pads is for inclement weather. |

My boys are both pad and outdoor trained. They prefer to go outside, especially for "big business," but the pad is okay with them too, as long as momma takes care of it right away. They also know not to potty in other people's homes or in public indoor places. |
Mine are all pad and outside trained. This works so beautifully! When I'm not home and they need to go, then the pads are down and they use them. When we travel in the motor coach, the pads are down and are a life saver so we don't have to worry about where we will be when they need to go. Also if we travel and just go into the hotel, then we don't have to worry about going outside at night or early morning. We can take our time having breakfast at the hotel and taking showers. The pads are also great on stormy days. During the day, evening and the last potty break before bed, is all done outside, (weather permitting) then the pads are down at night. It all works perfectly for the girls, and of course us. ;) |
Jaycie and Macy are both outdoor trained, but on rainy days I hate for them to go outside and get muddy, so I prefer they use a puppy pad. Every once in a while they might miss the pad/paper. But mommy is okay with that occasionally.lol :D Every time they would go potty in the house, I would say "no,bad dog" and put them outside for a while. |

Mine are basically pad trained- they will go outside if they are out there but use the pads on a day to day basis. It is really the only thing that would work in my house- there is no way I would expect them to hold it for 9+ hours while I am at work, its just not fair. I still try to have someone stop in and check on them during the day but that doesn't always work. |
Outside only. Basically 100% potty trained. He'll have a very occasional poop slip up on maybe a really nasty stormy day, in the basement (partial finished). But I'd say that's literally once every 4-6 months. Even during the hurricane, he just decided to hold it. Even if I set out pee pads, I doubt he'd EVER use them lol. He has always needed a ton of space to do business - usually won't even go in little townhouse backyards when we dogsit. |
I have had an outdoor trained Yorkie before, and this time I puppy pad trained her (will go outside if we happen to be out). I have to say I LOVE puppy pad trained so much more. No more dragging leaves in the house, or trying to get her to go in the rain. She's easier to keep clean. No messing with flea meds. No letting in all the cold/hot air. She can go by herself and doesn't need the door opened... I love having her trained this way. And when we go visit someone, i can just unfold a puppy pad & she gets her business taken care easily. I'm all for it! |
