Dew Claws I am just curious to know how many YT have their dew claws and how many had it removed. Those that have their YT with dew claws...is it a hassle? Please share! :) |
Mine don't have them, the breeder apparently removed them when they were a few days old. I had a Maltese that still had her front dew claws, and while they never were injured, they did have to be watched very carefully. They grew very tightly curved, so they had to be trimmed quite often so that they did not grow back into her skin/leg. |
I didn't vote because I can't pick just one! Armani has none, Chloe has hers. Honestly, it is not a hassle at all to have them, the groomer clips them short like any other nail when she is in and they are never any concern. I would prefer a breeder to clip them when the pup is a few days old, but if they do not, I will not have them removed myself when they are older. |
Also Uni's were already removed when we got her. I had fostered two that had them, and as one was very paw shy, was impossible to clip them. If I were to ever purchase a puppy again, having no dew claws would be an important factor for me. More important that docked tail. |
I would much prefer to have them removed. I have a yorkie that still has his and they are very difficult to trim and I can't seem to get them shorter than they already are and they are quite long... Even the vet techs (who trim his nails) can't get them down enough and she's accidently cut into the quick once. Ugh. Next puppy I get will definitely have them removed. I've already contacted a breeder where we are going to move to in a year and she has them removed as well as the tails docked by her vet when she has puppies. So that's good, for me. I feel sorry that the puppies will be in pain but it's much better to have them done as a day old or so instead of doing it when they are older. Just my two cents. :) |
Rosie were removed when we got her. However, we just had Mikki's removed by the vet about 2 weeks ago. The vet recommended having them removed so I did. So both of my girls do not have them. |
Both my baby's have theirs and the vet trims them. I don't think its a hassle. |

It depends on how much the dewclaw is attached or not. If it's hanging by a thread, it's best to have it removed, otherwise it can get snagged on the carpet and rip out on its own. It happened to Mimimomo. If it's on there good, no reason to get it taken off for no reason. |
Couver doesn't have his dew claws. His breeder had them removed along with his tail docked. Khloe has a full tail and dew claws. Personally, I have not had any problems with Khloe's dew claws and would not have them removed if I adopted a puppy. |

She is doing fine. You would not know that she had her spay and her dew claws removed. She is a little spit fire! Lol. Since she was having her spay it only cost me $90. It would have been more if I hadn't done it all together. I am going to be honest with you about the dew claws. My vet recommended it because Mikki's previous owner had let her dew claws get really bad. So, I did it at his recommendation. I don't think the spay bothered her at all because she was too concerned with the dew claws. I think it hurt her more than the spay. However, she did have meds and ended up doing just fine. Today she acts like it never happened! :) |
They are a hassel Shylah still has hers and Starsky doesn't. If I had a choice I would rather them not have them at all. Shylahs can curl and I worry about them digging into her. They are very thin. I always let the groomer know she has them so they make sure to clip them. They are just a hassel that all. |

Mikki's had curled around and was going into her skin. That is why we removed them. I am glad I did now. |
Levi doesn't have them and Lily does. My vet wouldn't remove Lily's with her spay because she thinks it's to painful for them when they are full grown. I just keep a watch on her so they don't get long. |
My baby has had hers removed. It was done already when I got her along with her docked tail. I wouldn't have mind if the tail was still intact. :D |
Sparky came to us without his dew claws already. |
Bella & Phoebe do not have their dew claws and Abby & my foster dog, DandyLion do. I prefer them without only because of the many times their nails got snagged on something. That nail grows at an angle and needs to be trimmed more often than the other nails. |
My boy was born without his. My girl has hers and they do not seem to bother her and she has not had an issue with them so far. She turned a year old the beginning of May. |
I'm very happy that Belle doesn't have any dew claws. Oliver, my shih tzu, has them on all four feet and they grow so quickly that it's a chore to keep clipping them. My big dog Ziggy has them on front paws only and his aren't as bad as Oliver's. |
Jax has them and I wish he didn't. They are very thick and curl tightly, and it's difficult to clip them without hurting him. I considered getting them removed but it just didn't seem worth the risk. |
Scoobers was a pup mill dumpee @ the pound...dew claws intact...still not sure how he snagged it while we were jogging...yet another expensive ER vet trip...not as concerning as the pain he went through.Ironically his tail was docked! Elvis and Princess came with their dew claws removed. I beleive it is a necessary procedure for active dogs...despite our alaskan friend whom has hers onher dog whom is very active with not a single injury ever in years. |
Norman had his removed during his neuter surgery a few weeks ago. Like others have mentioned, his were tightly curved and very hard to trim. He seems oblivious to the fact that he had it done... |
Sasha does not have her dew claws. Her breeder had them removed as they were already gone once I brought her home. |
my male had his removed at 3 days old and my female had them removed incorrectly and now only has a nail growing back wrong and it was growing into her leg like a tight curl the day i got her we had to get that clipped and she will have it re-removed at some point and will have to go under for it because of her age :( |
I hate dew claws. Callie has them and she had one get stuck when she was outside and it riped her nail off leaving the nerve and vein exposed and had to go to the vet and be sedated then have her nerve and vein cut back. |
Tibbe had his removed along with tail docked but one dewclaw partially regrew sometime after I got him at 9 mos. Found it when he was about 2. It's tiny but had no idea was regrown some time. He had none at 9 mos. because I looked his ankles over so closely when I first got him home so I could assess him better for problems, etc., before taking him to the vet next day. He had none and then he had this tiny one that I missed as it regrew somehow. I use the Pedipaws on it occas. and keep it short just like his other claws. |
Gracie had only one dew claw that was removed when she was spayed. |
