What do you do for dental hygiene? So i just started brushing my yorkies teeth every other day, and just bought a teeth scaler, to clean his teeth. He has gotten so used to it now it a breeze. I also give him greenies, although i dont see what they dog (but he loves them!) so yea what do you do for your yorkies teeth? and if you have used greenies how do they work for you? :D |
Petzlife, brush teeth and an occasional dental chew. |
I absolutly refuse to use greenies... When Sasha was about 8 months old I got one for her... Just the little toy sized one. Well, she liked it so much she swallowed it whole right there in front of me. Gone! Finito! She didn't eat anything else for 4 days... She didn't even poop for 3... It was a little scary! |
Brush almost daily. OraVet weekly. MaxiGuard occasionally. Floos sometimes. Dentals as needed. Don't like Greenies, their reputation, or the company. Would not use them. Don't scare here because they need to be buffed after. Only scaled during dental. |

Our future Yorkie will get regualr dental cleanings at the Vet, as well as us brusging her teeth. A good deep cleaning is the way to go every year or so. To never do it is a cause for possible vacterial infections, loose teeth, and gun disease. |
Daily teeth brushing, 1 petrodex chew weekly and scaling as needed. |
We use Petzlife 3 times a week and that is said to soften tartar. We brush teeth twice a week, and Joey uses a bullystick nightly. When he's using it, it's almost like he scraping his teeth. Also, his brand of kibble says it has things in it that help prevent tartar. At almost 4, he still doesn't need a professional tooth cleaning, and his teeth are white, and breath smells great! |

Thats scary that she swallowed the whole thing! thank God she is alright! because i have read some horror stories regarding them. Im very particular about when i give greenies to Shia because he gobbles them so quickley, so i do what another poster said and i hold it while he chews. |

what would be used for buffering? I didnt know they needed to be buffed (guess i need to do more research of scaling teeth.) so far however ive only needed to do it on his really back teeth because there is this tiny tooth in the back of his mouth that looked horrible... (i didnt even know the tooth existed.. ) its all better now however lol. |

I brush daily and use petzlife gel every third day. Armani is about to turn three and still has perfectly white teeth. :) |
Eddie just turned 6 and I've tried to brush daily since he was a pup. At checkups, they always said his teeth looked great, and one vet even said it looked like he'd had a recent cleaning. This year, the vet said he had mild gum disease and would benefit from a cleaning. I did it, and the tech who did the cleaning said he wasn't bad at all, just some tartar on the back teeth that cleaned right up. His teeth are pearly white once again. I'm a firm believer in daily brushing. It literaly takes me less than a minute with a finger brush. |

Fortunately, YTers told me otherwise. I'm sure an annual cleaning would have been even better, but I can't help but think I've saved a couple thousand dollars by brushing. If he can go another 4-5 years before the next cleaning, there's a couple more thousand -- all for a minute a day or less. |

Mike, it wasn't that long ago when dentists said the same thing about humans. They just expected people to lose their teeth. |

Hey What kind of finger brush do you use? (they have those all plastic ones, and the ones with the bristles, like regular tooth brushes.. ) Those were amazing results! i certainly would like for my little mans teeth to be that clean at age four |
Since mine doesn't want me to brush her teeth, I just give her a bone or treat for dental care and sometimes do nothing.. |

I would do some reading on greenies - I fed them every once in a while, but then I heard that they can cause bowel obstructions, and I haven't fed them since. My 13 year old brother just adopted a labradoodle from the pound last week, and when he looked at greenies, I informed him of the same thing. Sure, the dogs might like them, but the possible health/death issue scares me enough to never buy them again. |

We brush teeth, give Himalayan chews and antlers. Jada had a dental last fall, she had a lot of tartar from bad food that her original owner gave her. Bogie hasn't had to have a cleaning yet, no tartar so far for him. |
What are greenies? I've never heard of them over here. I brush their teeth but am thinking of trying to get some Petzlife after reading posts on the boards. |
We brush daily using a piece of gauze wrapped around my index finger with Oxyfresh Pet Gel. I also use Oxyfresh Pet Orgal Hygiene Solution in their water. We also use Aromadog Bluto's Yummy Gummy Brush, using a q-tip and run along the gum line from and back as well as roof of mouth and tongue following brushing. Sounds like a lot, but it takes only about 30 seconds and makes a huge difference overall. We used Petzlife for about 2 years, but discontinued as I was unhappy with results. I swear by the Oxyfresh Pet Gel (it doesn't have a disgusting smell of chicken or other flavored pet toothpaste) and the Bluto's Gummy Brush for keeping breath smelling great! |
