Is your Yorkie a hero? We've all heard tales of true hero dogs, the ones who save their owners' lives by alerting them to a fire or warding off an intruder. There are stories of dogs chasing off or fighting an attacking animal. And I even read where a large Lab dragged its injured owner to safety on a hiking trip. How about Yorkies? Do they have the hero gene? Has your Yorkie done anything heroic? If the opportunity presented itself, do you think he or she would rise to the occasion? I'm making this a poll, but I'd prefer some discussion and examples. Here are mine: Eddie: He's good at alerting me to moose in the area. Up here, moose can walk right in your backyard, and they can be dangerous if you surprise them. Eddie knows the scent, and he'll bark long before I realize there's a moose around. I have no doubt he could save my life by alerting me to one's presense. Jillie: She's a busybody, and she knows where everyone is at every time. There have been a couple of occasions when I've let Eddie out in the backyard and forgotten about him. But good ol' Jillie-on-the-spot doesn't allow that to happen. The second Eddie returns to the door, she lets me know. Rusty: I know, I know, I said YORKIES, but we might as well open it to all our dogs. Rusty is a Lab, a pretty docile one at that. He prefers being left alone and never, ever fights. But there have been at least four occasions when he's stepped in between the Yorkies and a dog he perceived to be a potential threat. No fight ever ensued, but I have no doubt he could save their lives if the worst were to happen. How about your dogs? |
Awww....Mike, that's so sweet about your guys, especially Rusty protecting the yorkies like that. LOLOL....around here they are all good to let you know about the UPS man. But, if my life were truly threatened, the only one I would count is the poodle, Louis - he has seemed to make the connection that all food goes through/by me and if I'm not here....well then....no one eats - and that worries Louis! I figure the dogs offer the first line of defense.....they bark to let me know....what I do after that is up to me. I don't ever see them as the types to try and bring down a cougar a la' Old Yeller style though:rolleyes: |

Bandit (being his neurotic self) was sleeping with my sister when I was visiting my parents house and I was out with friends. A drunk kid from across the street got naked and walked about a mile from his house to our house and started walking in our yard and Bandit went INSANE. He wouldn't stop barking and finally got my sister up who got my Dad up who saw the kid and called the cops. He wound up falling down the hill and almost falling into the pond. If Bandit hadn't alerted everyone I don't know if he would have made it through the night. He was taken to the hospital for alcohol poisoning and to be checked over, but it was in the middle of winter in NY so he could have frozen. GO BANDIT!!!:animal-pa |
Woohoo! Another genuine hero Yorkie and proof that barking is not always bad. |
Definitely proves the difference between nuisance barking (which I still can't break despite all the pennies in a can and spray bottle....I'm going to try the thing from Pet Parade next) and warning barking. I love my Bandit-man!! |

Hmm... I don't know if Jackson's done anything "heroic" per say and I don't know if he honestly would step up to the plate in the time of an emergency. He definitely is an alert barker. There was this one time when one of my step-dad's good friend came over (and Jackson didn't know him) but he opened my door (which was cracked) and Jackson went NUTS! Until I told him it was okay. But it definitely made me feel safe because he was definitely protecting me from a stranger coming into my bedroom. He also, like Jillie, lets me know when his "buddy" dogs are waiting at the door to be let in. Over at my dad's house, they've got 2 dogs and Jackson will give a little "woof" to let me know that Buddy or Lily is waiting at the door to be let in, lol. |
