How often do you walk your dog? I walk Eddie at least once every day for at about 20 minutes, but a lot of the informational sites I've seen on Yorkies say they don't need a lot of exercise and can get enough around the house. I'm wondering what others think and do. A poll will follow, but be patient. I haven't figured out how to post both at the same time  |
Since i am toby's "person" ... he is my responsibility, however, i usually get home after dark and it is not safe to walk at that time. I walk him to the mailbox and back (all the way across the complex)... and if i get home beofre dark we take a longer one |

I walk them every now and then. I need to do it more. |
We live in a rural area, if I walked down the road with Tinkerbell, someone's loose dog would chase us down the road and eat us! :p We go to the park with my kids occasionally, but mostly we play fetch in the house and all the dogs chase after each other in the yard a lot during the day. |
Teddy rarely walks out in public. He has been attacked twice by bigger dogs so I am more than paranoid with him. We do have a huge back yard though and he plays catch me if you can with the Labs so his exercize needs are being more than met. |
I try to walk Gus and our other dog once a day for about 45 minutes. It is their favorite thing to do. They go nuts when the time is approaching and I feel awful when I can't take them out - like when I'm sick or too busy. I wanted to add since I'm the one that plays with him (other dog has no interest in play) the walk is needed to get rid of some of his energy. I can only play fetch for so long and he is like the Energizer Bunny. |

I walk Trixie around the block in the mornings. And at night I try to get at least a 30 min walk in; longer in the summer and on the weekends. |
Bailey goes on usually 2 walks a day, the one is just around the block,,BUT, if he sees me putting on my tennis shoes, he knows that we are going on a WALK-WALK!! And He is READY! He loves it,,, pees on EVERY tree... which can really make ya loose your momentum.... but the walks are for him not me. Isn't it strange how they KNOW certain things,, like tennis shoes,,, long walk.... and regular shoes,,just around the block.. and other endless things ,,, how do they know?? It always amazes me, how smart they are. |
I have tried to take Baby on walks with me, but she has a luxating patella in one of her legs, and as long as she does not get too over excited I don't have any problems with it. However, walks are too much excitement and I notice her limping, I don't want her to be in pain. Makes me sad though...so we excersize her a lot in the house.. |
We only walk Reagan about once a week. I'm trying to get the motivation to walk more, but that's more for me than her. Mon-Tues she gets at least half and hour outside play time, Wed-Fri its more like and hour or more and on Sat-Sun we're outside 3/4ths of the day. Sometimes though if we've been outside all weekend then come Monday she's a little wound up from not being used to being inside all day. Other than that I think she's getting enough exercise, she doesn't seem to be bored or acting up or anything. |
I've always tried to walk mine at least once a day (sometimes more than once). This is a problem in the winter when it gets dark so early, but I always rush and manage one time or another unless the weather prevents it. I feel like I'm responsible for their health and it is quite true that exercise helps their organs to work. I believe it is also good for their psychological health and outlook. It helps to make for a happier doggie. :D |

Walks Our girls love to walk and some weeks we get out nightly for anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes. Since it is getting dark earlier, we are letting them stay out in the yard more in the afternoons since we can not walk as much after dinner before dark. But the last week we have been taking short walks in the dark with a flashlight.....the girls have found that frogs are out at night and love trying to find them. |
IMO yorkies need a lot of exercise! Well, maybe it's just Thor but he can run around like a headless chicken for 48 straight! I think his walks calm him down. I have also read that they can get enough by just running around the house or apt. but I beg to differ. |
I'm a Yorkie-walkin' machine! :D Bender gets walked for about 10-15 min every 4 hours or so. We had to take him for walks to potty from the time he was a puppy until just a few weeks ago, due to living on the 5th floor of an apartment building. Now that he has his own house and yard, he loves it, but he doesn't think he is allowed to go potty unless he is on the leash. So, when he comes up to me and sneezes a bunch, I ask him where his leash is and he takes me to wherever I set it down last (I always lose it) and out we go! :animal36 |
We are fortunate, since we have a fenced yard. Our large dogs live in the fenced yard, so Maggie always has a babysitter close by. She loves to go outside and play. She doesn't even mind the sprinkler system or rain, interfering with her playtime. |

I agree 100%. We have a fenced yard also as Brenda said she does, but for mine that just isn't enough exercise. Mine is bigger than Brenda's! :D She spends a lot of her day out in the yard running around, but she still needs those walks. It's true that it helps their organs to work better. I'll bet the rest of you have the same experience as I do that either while we are walking or after we come back from the walks that they will poopy! :D |

We haven't been doing a lot of walks because it was just too hot. But now it's starting to cool down so we are going to get back into the habit of doing at least one walk a day. Unfortunately I have to drive them both to a park because I don't like walking them around our neighborhood because several people own very ill-behaved large dogs and that worries me with my two little ones. So on days we don't make it out for a walk we do a LOT of fetch down the hall. Tuffy fetches the ball and Pixie runs after Tuffy and we do that until they get tired of it.. which is usually about 1-2 hours laterl. :p |
I walk Ginger here at work whenever I get a chance. (My boss lets me bring her to work! :p ) Which ends up being about 4, 10 minute walks in the workday. If the weather's good we'll go out at lunch too. That’s really the only time we have to fit it in ‘til the weekends. And I always feel guilty for not walking her more. Her “walks” are really her walking with me around the shop (it’s a big place) so she gets to get out and say “hi” to everyone. I think the socializing is really important for her too. Everyone here loves her, so it’s a nice brake from the workday for them too. :) When we get home at night she’s spastic, running all over the house so I’m hoping she’s getting what she needs. |
