How Important is Obedience training? I happen to think that obedience training is essential for any dog no matter what it's size. My opinion about this has been reaffirmed lately by watching the Dog Whiperer televison show. It is a safety issue in my opinion and it is the best thing for the dog since they are pack animals by nature and need to have "BOSS" to bw happy and content in their role. I have heard yorkie owners who are opposed to training their yorkies express numerous reasons for not finding it necessary like they like the fact that they 'rule the house" and are "in control". They are small so they cannot get into much trouble, they are too small to train, they are too stubborn, they are impossible to train, etc. I wondered what the consensus was on here and what your individual thoughts are in this area. Thanks for participating! :) |
i think it is essentisal. it can litteraly save their lives. it also makes for much happier living! :D |
I said No. 2, very important but not essential, only because I've seen and owned a lot of terrific dogs that minded me well enough without obedience training. In fact, Eddie is the first dog I've ever felt absolutely had to have it. He wouldn't mind me. He'd run out in the street, he wouldn't come when called. For him, it is essential, and I've been delighted with the results so far. Speaking of which, anybody ever heard of Attention Training? That's what Eddie's in now as a prelude to Agility. It's very simple so far. They're teaching "Watch." I hold a treat in front of his nose, then move it up to my side and tell him "Watch." He loves it, because it's easy and he gets lots of treats. I imagine it will be important in Agility. |

I chose slightly important but I think it depends on the dog. My dogs have never had obedience training. We have a hawk problem so Gus is always on a leash when outside. If he was allowed to run free I would worry about him seeing an animal, losing his little mind and taking off. Other than that he listens very well. My first yorkie was the best dog I've ever owned. Once he knew a command word he obeyed without fail. He was allowed to run free - he was a big yorkie and this was before I knew hawks attacked dogs - he never ran away and if he drifted too far, came back immediately when I called. If I had a dog that wouldn't obey, I would think it very important. I'm with them 24/7 so that might make a difference. And if we were any closer I don't think I could stand it. ;) |
Medium for my Yorkie but Highly important for my husband. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA :p :p :p :p :p |

IMO not essential. I think that having a dog that minds and one that is well behaved is important. I don't think that obedience training is essential. I think that to each his own. If it is essential to you and yours then go for it, it is a very rewarding experience provided you have the right teacher. I went through an obedience training course, when I was a teenager, with my first dog Einstein, he was a Schnauzer. I had alot of fun and I learned alot. I have taught Matise on my own to walk on a leash(he's only 3 lbs. it's not hard to restrain him!!! ;) :D ), the "STOP" command(so he stops dead in his tracks when he is off leash), come, sit, down. In my opinion this breed(well most terriers) can be very-stubborn and think they are "in control" but I think that you can establish that you are the Alpha without obedience training. Maybe if you are a first time dog owner then you maybe should consider it. IMO. :) |
According to my wife==My obediences is crucial to my wellbeing. |
I think that it is essential. It is nice to go out into public with a very well behaved dog. I think it also gives the animal a sense in pride to please the owner! :) |
