Does your Yorkie prefer people or dogs? Eddie is a people person. He gets excited around other dogs and tolerates most of them, but he doesn't really play with them. I don't know where I went wrong with his socialization. He prefers people. I started thinking about it at our little-dog meetup tonight. When each new dog arrived, Eddie was the first to greet them, all excited, tail wagging. But after a sniff or two, he ran right back to me. Then he'd make the rounds from person to person. He'd sniff another dog occasionally, but he never plays like all the other dogs do. In fact, he ended up getting in a tiff with a shih-tzu, the second such tiff with the same breed in a couple months. I'm just wondering if it's an Eddie thing or a Yorkie thing. Which do your Yorkies prefer, people or dogs? |
Well, I don't know if it's a Yorkie thing or just a Sapphire and Eddie thing. ;) I swear they are soulmates! Sapphire does the exact same thing!! |
Layla is ALL About people- she just goes CRAZY- wags her tail- gets all low to the ground- can't decide if she wants to give them her front end or back end first... lol.... Layla is not crazy about other dogs- as long as they are calm she will tolerate them and sometimes she is happy to see the dog- again i don't know where i went wrong either! When she was a puppy she was around dogs a lot- and she goes to her sitters who has two dogs (who Layla just LOVES) but other dogs- she isn't crazy abou the. |
mine prefer people also..they just love to give kisses and want to just play with people. they are okay with other dog..they just tolerate them but don't play much with other dogs. I tried my best to always socialize them with other dogs but they just prefer people over other dogs. |
Mine like each other so I thought they would be more receptive to other yorkie visitors but really aren't. |
Mine will tolerate other dogs, but people are her favorite. She goes crazy whenever she sees people whether she knows them or not. She just loves the attention!:aimeeyork |
Bailey is a people person too, but I'm trying to work on her socialization which is why I want to comtinue the meetups! :) |
All 3 of mine prefer people. I don't think they know they're dogs:rolleyes: |
Well it depends... SOME dogs bella will like, some she will hate! mostly big dogs.. and the strangest thing is.. bella LOVES little kids but she cant stand OLDER overweight or tall people. Its very weird. i have had a couple of very tall friends over that were a little big bigger and she barks and growls!! Anyone else have this experience?? |
Hmm, just when I thought I had it figured out, I check these poll results and find that the overwhelming choice is "people." It was encouraging to see a healthy number saying both, however. A friend suggested that perhaps Eddie was taken from his mom and siblings too soon. It makes sense. We got him at about 10 weeks, perhaps less, from a person who got him from a breeder and discovered they were allergic to him. Presuming it took at least a couple weeks for them to discover the allergy and think about rehoming, it's likely that Eddie left his siblings before 8 weeks. Poor guy. But, then again, this poll seems to show it may be more of a breed thing. Interesting, though. |

My girl most definitely prefers any four legged over the two legged variety. Sure, she gets excited when someone comes home or visits. If you would play fetch with her, she'd do it forever. If you run with her, she will choose you over the new dog in sight after a brief moment of hesitation. However, on any normal given day, she'd choose to meet a new dog/cat/bird/squirrel over any human. Okay, the birds and squirrels might be for food but the dogs and cats are for play. I got her at 4.5 months. At the time, she was not the last of the litter to leave home. When I was there to meet/buy her, she was so preoccupied playing with her brother and mother, she barely had the patience to tolerate us humans handling her, keeping her from her playmates. I think the breeder had also been busier than usual with her life at that point during the developmental stages of my girl's life to have given her as much human attention as she should otherwise have done. Besides my girl's immediate biological family, she also had other dogs to play with. Once I brought her home, she was immediately attracted to my cat. Once the cat accepted her, she'd report to the cat on call 100% of the time--she would drop all that she was doing to run to the cat. We've never taught her the cat's name purposefully, but that was the first word she has learned from us and responded to without fail. The only odd thing is, during her puppy classes, she did not care to truly play with any of the other dogs. There were three others: a shih tzu, collie border-cross lab, and a smaller yorkie. When she would excitedly approach the very friendly and gentle giant of a collie-mix, she'd suddenly start cowering and trying to run from it when it approaches her to nudge her for play. She'd sometimes go over to check out the yorkie boy, but she'd lose interest and was more there to take a bite out of his treats than to socialize with him. But immediately afterwards, she'd show a lot more interest in the new dogs coming into the store and also outside during her walks. She'd want to do the pounce and play with them. |
Nolee prefers people also! I does like dogs, but only for a little bit, then he is right in my lap! I guess it is because he is the only dog in the house?? |
Barney is my little neurotic one...Likes no one other than me and sometimes my 2 yr old granddaughter...Does not like people or other animals if he had his choice....If I am not around he will literally go to his crate and lay on his bed til I get home..His choice again...Then when I am here, he is like velcro....Got him at 4 months..However the breeder's hubby was terribly ill and in and out of hospital and so he did not get the attention he would have normally....And she made me aware of this at the time I got him... Belle absolutely loves people.....Gets all excited and hyper...But does not want to be held....Just pet and play.....My little tomboy..lol...Got her at about 12.5 weeks...Raised in a home enviroment..Kids played with her all the time...But they were not allowed to pick her up...Think this is interesting in regards to her disposition Bevo loves everyone and everything...He thinks everyone and thing are here to see him and love him.....Since he was a tiny- he was given extra attention and it sooo shows..lol...Got him at 12 weeks...Would like to have waited a bit longer...But we are doing great Joyce |
That's cute their own little yorkie click! Are they MeanGirls? |
People definitely. It's partly my fault though because I really should've socialized her with dogs more when she was a puppy. She just isn't sure of them now, especially with the larger ones. She'll play, but sometimes she gets a little carried away and defensive. My neighbors just got a yorkie mix about 3 months ago and they get along great, so I'm excited for the summer so they can have "play dates." |
I'm glad to see that your furbaby plays with cats, because Ethan does as well. Once i left my door open for him to run in and out because i was cleaning, and i returned to find him excurting a cat to his food, and he was being polite. I was too surprised to be up set... |
KiKi definitely prefers people....she will totally ignore other dogs..we have had play dates with other Yorkies and she will just sit and ignore the other dog...but she will run up to other people on a walk or at Pet Smart...she just loves the attention....what a PRINCESS!! |
Its not just Eddie... Meka is the same way :) I take her to the monthly Yorkie Group meetups in our area and its always the same. When I put her down, the other pups are anxious to sniff her and play and she just doesnt want to be bothered  sometimes even snaps at them. And she always comes running back to me, wanting me to pick her up. I too, feel I must have done something wrong with her socializing skills. We didnt start the meet up groups until she was 1 yr and a half and I sometimes think that maybe we should have been doing it much earlier. I do envy the other dogs that go and play with eachother...for I have never seen her actually play with another dog. Now people on the other hand, total different story. She goes crazy over anybody. Rolling and jumping around. Totally anxious to get their attention. :) |

Twinkle prefers people too! She is ok around smaller breed dogs (king charles spaniels, shihtzu's etc) but she's not too keen on bigger dogs, even though she's been socialised with lots of them. On the other hand, she loves all people.....luckily everyone she meets seems to love her too :) xxx |
oooh geez mine like people AND other dogs. my friend teresa came over a few weeks ago with one of her babies (gracie ruth) and my kids just went nuts, wanting to play with her and gracie. they kept kissing her, jumping in her lap, licking her toes, etc and i said, "teresa, i am sorry my kids are such wallflowers. i wish they would be less shy!" :p miss buffey and bree are the most interested in other dogs once they determine their human owner to be "safe" :) bentley is a total people person and would rather sit on someones lap and lick them to death than play with other dogs |
JoJo prefers people. He could do without dogs completely. |
Doggy comfy Harry is a rescue, and for the first 7 months was pretty much on his own with little human interaction.....he is just now realizing that people are nice, and they have food too:D |
equally, but loves me most by far! ;) |
