The best food for Yorkies I am so confused with what is the best food. |
From the "look" of Tricksie's picture..........her coat is beautiful and she looks healthy.........whatever you are feeding her is working! I feed mine Nat. Balance Duck/Potato, Wellness Weight Management and Nature's Variety New Zealand Vension. I also add some canned Wellness or Nat. Balance. |
its' overwhelming isn't it? Basically you are looking for any food that does not list a bi-product... and does not have any form of gluten. You also don't want it to contain chicken and you want to see as many "whole" ingredients (meat, veggie, starch) as possible listed first. If you go on to the website of the following foods, and look at the ingredients.. you'll see what i mean. everyone has an opinion of what is "best" but jus tmake sure you are feeding a high quality food and you shouldn't see any health issues related to the food wellness, Solid gold, Natural Balance, Orijen. |

To the original poster, do you want to feed kibble or something else? Are you having problems with the current food? |
The best food for Yorkies There was a tread posted yesterday about recalls, I didn't go in depth much but Natural Balance and Natural Life were 2 of the many. She included a web site on rating your dogs food. I feed Tricksie wet mixed with kibble which is Innova EVO, on the site it said Not to feed to small dogs because it has too much protein. She is only 2 and I just don't want to put the wrong foods in her body. I know I should home cook, especially after so many recalls. |

That recall list is old. Those foods, as far as I know, are not being recalled right now. Some people like high protein and some people don't. It comes down to your feeding philosophy. If Innova Evo says don't give it to small dogs, then I wouldn't. If another website says don't give it to small dogs, that is an opinion. I don't believe there is one brand of dog food on the market without past or current problems or some concern. Are there any brands you are semi-comfortable with? And although I fully support homecooking, any of the ingredients or supplements I use could be recalled at any time. I am slightly more comfortable with food fit for human consumption though because recalls "may" happen faster if there is a problem... |
According to the list that was posted Natural Balance was there because of Rice Gluten! Rice Gluten is NOT used in Natural Balance Kibble. Perhaps in wet food it is I don't know about that. Natural Balance is a safe food and was not on the recall list last year either. Their site states they use every precaution to keep their products safe. The ingrediants in their kibble are good. It also has a good rating. I have used this product for three years and Buddy is thriving on it. Maybe too much at 16lbs. I also home cook daily for him and add to the kibble twice a day. I hope nothing comes of a recall in the future because I plan never to switch to anything else. |

My Diva it Wellness Small Breed Dog food. |
If you decide on commercial kibble, then call the company and ask them for a tour so you can see exactly how it's made and exactly what it's made with. If they don't give tours, then I strongly suggest feeding real food. |
