Can your Yorkie catch food or toys out of the air? Eddie is the smartest dog I've ever owned, but he can't for the life of him catch anything. I toss a ball, and he heads it like a soccer player. I toss a treat, and it bounces off his nose. I've even resorted to tossing popcorn -- the easiest thing in the world for an animal to catch. It sticks in his fur. So here's a poll. Can your Yorkie catch anything? |
No, Piccolo cannot catch anything. We have tried.... Oh well. But, she can do plenty of other tricks! :D |
Nope, no "catchers" in this house. I have recently seen a video of someones Yorkie having a bunch of fun with bubbles......... have you tried that? |
No for me too!! I tried.. but my 5 yorkie are to busy pushing each other to catch the treat first! |

Fun poll! I said, yes/treats because Bernie is quite good at catching food.:) He doesn't even try to catch toys, just waits until they land. Ginger wonders why I'm throwing food at her...so if I could vote twice, I'd also have to select NO!:D |
My female is great at catching treats or toys but my boys look at me like, "Gee Mom, don't throw it at us!" |
Brownie is the best at catching everything!! even the tinyest piece of kibble from across the room !! |
Great poll/thread idea, Mike! I've always wondered why my two can't catch anything, but I know there are lots of dogs that can! |
Moose is the catcher of all catchers!! He will and can catch anything and everything.:p Catch is one of his favorite past times. We tell him he could be a lone center fielder on the baseball field. He would be all over outfield....left, right and center.. he'll go for the ball. :D Now Mimi....she is another one who is like.....geeze mom/dad why are you throwing things at me?? |
Cooper's favorite game is fetch with the CHUCK IT! and he can catch the ball in mid-air. He also loves is Kong puppy-frisbee, but he gets possessive of it and doesn't want to bring it back....Baxter and Darcy won't catch anything but food :D |
We learned a few techniques in trick class, if anyone is interested in teaching this. First always start with food. They even sell a popcorn-like food that sort of floats that can be used for this, but cheerios work pretty good. They are going to make lots of mistakes, but finally they will get the hang of it. Associate the word, "catch" with throwing a treat, and when they are fairly good at catching treats, or at least not dodging it, you can try a toy. I always make Joey "sit" before we play the catch game, and it's useful if they understand the word "back up" as well. I found a cloth Frisbee that was perfect for training this trick. If it hit him in the nose, it doesn't scare him; you don't want to use anything that is made of plastic. After he got pretty good with that, I used other toy, and once I tried a small ball, and he did catch it, but he almost choked on it, so you need to be careful with that. Occasionally, he will make a wild leap for the toy I throw, but nothing like a golden retriever catching a Frisbee, at least not yet. |

Thanks for the info. I've been wanting to teach how to catch a frisbee and had no clue how to go about it. I found something like a frisbee at Dollar tree. It is foam with netting around it. I've thrown it but they just look at me and then they go and get it when it lands. I've been wanting other things to teach them, so catch is a good one. |
