Have you ever done your own shots? Just curious about this. I gave my newest puppy the rest of his distemper combo shots (he'd had one,and needed two more over the last couple months). They went well, and he was such a good sport about it. A vet has to do the rabies vaccine. Any thoughts on doing your own shots--pros, cons? |
I have no opinions on people that do their own shots I just know I could never do it. I get tears in my eyes when the vet does it there is just no way that I could ever do it myself. |
My EX boyfriend raises pitbulls (for pets only) (they are so sweet) and he gives all the puppies their shots. He used to be a vet though but he quit and now he is back in school because he wants to be a general surgeon. |
I prefer to have my vet do it because I'd never forgive myself if I hurt my babies. |
If I was more experienced, I would. I would want to make sure I new exactly what I was doing. I gave our goats shots before. |

I don't do my own shots but my breeder did. |
I don't do my own.. even if I could I'm not sure that I would. Pixie's breeder was considering giving her pups shots just to avoid having to take them to the vet and possibly exposing them to something. |
When I was active in rescue and had foster dogs I did all the shots. I have never done my own dogs though. I prefer to leave that up to the vet because then there is more acurate records and all that stuff. Plus I couldn't do that to my own dogs. they would hate me. Its bad enough giving Recon a bath. |
there is no way i could give bentley his own shots!! |
A Lot of breeders and and Just family pet people give their own shots where I live. I have never done it. |
The first shots are given by the vet and they get a good check over. I give their second shots 2 weeks later. The first time I did it, I cried and thought I was going to throw up...but that was with GSPs. I get my husband to hold the pup and then I give it to them and massage each one for about 5 minutes to make sure they don't develop a lump. |
Oops, I mistakenly hit "I don't vaccinate my dog" instead of "My vet vaccinates my dog." Too tired to read, I guess. I don't want people to think there are unvaccinated dogs out there. |
I just did my shots the other day and everything went just fine. I did my cats annual and gave both of the little ones there 3rd booster, I am in school working on my degree to be a vet tech so I have to it anyway and I have done a good job the seceret is to be fast and rub the skin really good before. both of my took it like champs. Plus at my vets the vet assistents do the shot and they dont know what they are doing both of my babies squiled when she started when they gave the shots when I did it they just squiled but I was already done. They both have had good checks by the vet and Princess already has her rabies and first 2 vaccs at the vets but money was tight and my vet is crazy if she thinks I am going to pay a double vet vist of $35. plus the vaccs just to give 2 babie there booster that take less than 5 mins to give. Plus Its more stress for me to take Princess and Koda to the vet for them they freek out asoon as we get there. So its beter on everyone plus saves a little money in the long run. But for Koda's last set of booster shots next month I am going to take him in to get it done since he needs to get his rabies. But I wouldnt do this if I didnt already know what I was doing. |
