I have a decision to make (OFF TOPIC ABOUT WORK)
 

I have to choose between my job at the school and the post office. The lady that I work for at the post office is taking the last week of this month off and my boss at the school won't let me.

I have such a heavy heart right now because I enjoy both jobs.

Pros of working at the school...insurance, summers off, great hours.

Cons: minimal pay, gossip of my co-workers to the point that they've made my life miserable this past year...and I keep to myself! Having my office taken away and made to work out front. Boss giving me BS work that could be given to the clerk that likes to surf on the internet all day. Horrible attitude from the boss.

Pros of working at the post office: no micromanaging, excellent pay, cross training in other areas

Cons: no insurance until you become full time, difficulty in taking days off, having to work in all kinds of weather. On days that I am working, having to miss out on kid programs at the school.

If you were in my shoes...which job would you choose?

USPS your kids will understand, mine did and they will benefit from a happier Mom. Only downfall I see is no insurance. Do the kids have any thru their Dad.

My daughter's father is suppose to have insurance on her. He never has so the way that the child support is set up is that I have it and he reimburses me. Thing is, he hasn't paid child support in almost a year...so I have not been getting reimbursed for anything.

Insurance through my husband's job is over $700 a month and we can't afford for him to carry the insurance. That's why I've always carried it for the kids.

I really don't want to tell you what you should do but I can tell you that life without insurance can be a HUGE hit to your budget!!! I will never go without insurance in this day and age...........too risky. I honestly don't know what we would have done with some of the hospitalizations of my husband had we not had insurance! That is a huge con for leaving the school job.......JMHO

If you go full time at the post office you will then have insurance right? Just from reading your post you seem happier at the post office, just my oppinion but that's what I got from your post:) Will you be able to get full time hours at the post office? In so far as the school job another pro to that though is that when your child is school age then you are at the school and I think get a little bit more of what you want for her, such as certain teachers etc. Is the school in your town where she'd be attending? As far as gossip. Huh I think that goes on everywhere and at every work place.

I work with many postal workers who are treated like %$#@!. The USPS is undergoing a lot of change, and the chances that you could get a micro manager boss are probably higher than you think. They are also pulling things like making people work 6 days a week, 10 hours a day. You might ask yourself the question, "Which environment will provide me the greatest stability, the best hours and the least likelihood of an on the job injury over the long run?"

With young kids - I'd say the school & screw the other people ...It seems all offices are like that. Just worry about you. People just don't have manners anymore do they ?

You have benefits and time off - that says alot. I have NO benefits even if I go on salary where I am, so I stay hourly - that way I can put in an 8 hour day and go...the bad part is I get clocked each time I leave - so I never leave lol -

but if I were in your shoes - I'd stay where you are - the kids are young only once.

unless you're totally miserable and it shows - then try the other job

I have 2 Sister-in-laws that work for the school system and I HAVE "NEVER" SEEN SO MUCH GOSSIPING IN ALL MY LIFE!!!!!! It is hard because one is married to my brother and I am removed from the family quite a bit do to some family disrespect issues and the other is married to my husbands brother and "TRIES" to not bring up family matters at work, Yeah Right! Oh And THEN throw in the mix my A HOLE brother is the school liason officer and works with both of them and is the reason for my removal of the family (my decision), who w/out my husbands dragging him to the State Capitol for a Govenors Pardon for a battery on his record for a young, dumb bar fight would not have been looked at by any police department let alone the one he AND my husband work for, AND if that isn't enough it was NEVER brought up that our city has a nepatisim (sp?) policy and my husband can never become a LT., Srgt., etc. because he cannot over see a family member...So from one who understands gossip and down right cruelty, do what makes you happy...I just truly believe "What goes around, comes around" and those who have not been so nice to you will have their day...Good Luck, Keep us posted;)

Hey with experience....why not look at other options too.....LOL

I think that I've decided to go with the USPS. Yeah, the hours can be long at times but RCA's don't get the micromanaging as the city carriers do.

Besides, my boss at the school more or less encouraged me to go with the USPS in our meeting yesterday. That leads me to believe that she wants me to go.

I spoke to my super at the post office and she told me that she's planning on training me on other routes next month.

It's going to be tough without insurance but I can't remember the last time I went to the doctor and my kids really only go during the winter months when they get sick.

It's a BIG risk to take and really, that's the only reason why I've stayed with the school for so long.

My husband has insurance through the county (which totally sucks) and he's had staph 3 times last year. It seems as though he's really the only one that needs it...I hope that I'm right.

Did the USPS give you any timeframe for when this job could possibly go full-time?

How long before you can go full time with USPS and get insurance? Can't you get insurance through your husband?

Average wait is 5 years to go full time...sometimes shorter, sometimes longer.

We can't afford to make it if my husband takes on the insurance. It would cost over $700 a month...compared to the $350 that I pay now.

Best of luck to you. I left the elementary school I worked at after 13 years -- I left behind kids that I dearly loved and a few select staff members that I also loved. I also left behind some of the worst gossiping and back stabbing. I have only been back to the school once to deliver some sewing and don't miss it one tiny bit.

I voted to continue working in the school system. I know that most of the workers are underpaid and that really does stink but the benefits are great and so is the time off. I have 3 school aged children and that would be the best employment for me. You have to do what will work for you and make you happy, Im sure you will make the right decision :)
