Does your yorkie "cower"? Layla has only EVER been touched in a loving way... all her life.. YET.. when people, myself included, go to pet her, she cowers and if you didn't know us, you would assume she is abused. Is Layla the only one? |
That is what many would think when you first think see a dog do this, but I know of dogs that were just like Layla. I think for some it is just in their nature. |
Morgan cowers sometimes when i call her over to me and she knows i'm going to pick her up. Most of the time its cause i want to bring her back downstairs to "our" room or to put her in her pen. She loves being out and being upstairs with my parents so that's probably why she cowers. she doesn't want to go. |
Brownie ...........never !! lol |
Tucker does this too! You would think someone beat this dog the way he backs away and cowers. We don't know what he's thinking! |
Kaba does this a lot. Never with me but with her daddy when he comes home from work and most everyone else. She has a very submissive personality. Always have. Will never be the alpha dog in any situation. I think its probably from living in a pet store for a few weeks after being taken from her mom. Also, just her personality. She also does the pee thing too when she cowers. We are trying to work on that when daddy comes home from work. I've read that its a submissive thing so for him to not talk sweet to her and pet her but to immediately give her commands such as sit and lay down. We will see if it works. |
zoey does this all the time and it frustrates me because I know that we never raised a hand to her. It drives me bonkers. Oh well what can we do. |
well, ,not really COWER,, but Cricket will back down a bit at times,, her's is just making sure some BIG person isnt going to step on her,, etc.. Trixie the same way,, but they are both on the small side,, 4 lbs,, but Daisy will do this behavior when i fuss at her for grabbing something or something like that,,, and head toward her,, shes never been mistreated,,but knows when she's done something she shouldn't have,, but none cower in fear,, Daisy is more like OPPS,, I forgot,, forgive me?? gives ya those big ole puppy dog eyes,,,,:teethysmi |
I've only had a couple of fosters that did that. Mine have never. I wonder why she is doing that? |
Yes Kodi does this. The only think I can think of is it is submisive thing... He has never Ever been hit but he will cower. It is Sad:( |

Lacy and Rylie both do somewhat. I think it's probably because we look so big and tall to them hovering right over. |

Same with Rosie. She seems like she was abused, but she's only been loved and spoiled. She gets real low to the ground and crawls to ppl so they can pet her. |
I adopted Gracie from a horrible breeder. She is five years old and for the first two years of her life she was keep in a kennel. Unfortatally, they used her as a meal ticket and had one litter after another. She does cower when you go to pick her up at times. She will also walk in circles when she is nervous. Overall though she is a very sweet, loving, little dog who stole my heart!:) |
omg, piper is a crawler too! its funny to watch her, its like shes GI Jane! funny lil traits thats dogs get from dogland. Both of mine do it but I think its coz they think they are gettin a baf! |
Scrappydoo does it i dont know why he does it . |
Gracie has never cowered but Dallas has since we brought him home as a pup (he's now 1 1/2 years). Now, if you're laying down, he comes right up to you without any problems...but something about standing up freaks him out. |
Yes sadie is afraid of the vacuum cleaner and will try to get up high (Like the couch) and she will shake. She used to be afraid of other people, the car, just about anything new but she is growing up and is not as afraid any more:D Chewy only does this when he smels smoke. When we cook bacon, he hides and shakes like a leaf. I am not sure why he does this... But other then smoke he is fine! |

But other then smoke he is fine![/QUOTE] our Daisy does that too, ,i guess they'll make good smoke alarms for us ,, ya think? and Cricket has only met ONE person she didnt like shyed away from.. woman smelled so of POT,, you could almost get high from her AROMA!! so, ,one tiny drug dog,, one teapot smoke alarm,, wonder what specialty Trixie will have,,;-) |
LeRoy does this and I don't know why as he has never been hit---only loved! He is hard to pick up as he gets nervous when we reach down to pick him up and then runs in circles. I am in the process of trying to teach him to go up on something like the wall so we can pick him up---he is doing pretty good with this but will take consistent training. Louie on the other hand comes right up to me to be picked up and does not seem nervous at all. I guess it's just there personalities! |
Bennie and Barney were the only two in the litter... Barney never cowers- does not know a stranger..... Bennie cowers at everything....He does the belly crawl to come to you for a treat....or to be petted....or whatever.... I know that they have never been hit or abused...Their breeder is a sweetheart...Barney acts like all her pets do...Very much the extroverts.... Bennie is the lone cowerer....Wish I knew what to do to help him overcome this... Any suggestions? Joyce |
yes, and I know it's 'cause he did something bad! ie. shredding tissue paper or documents!!! |
Stedman does this! It's weird because he doesn't duck his whole body down, but sometimes when you go to pet him on his head, he ducks his head (his head ONLY) - my hubby and I just cannot figure him out, lol. Like Layla, Stedman has never been touched in anything but a loving way, so it makes absolutely no sense to us. And we of course got him when he was a baby, so it can't be anything in his past. We just don't get it! Tatum never ever does this...but she WILL run away if someone she doesn't know tries to pet her, or pick her up. She is just a mommy's girl, and she is shy around people she doesn't know LOL. Little mess  |
Gage cowers and there is no "perhaps" on abuse - he was most definitely abused before I rescued him. He is getting better but it has been a looooong road with him - one I'm so very glad I chose to go down:) |

Wrigley loves to jump up and lay in our laps, but if we reach down to pick her up, she ducks her head, tucks her tail and acts like she is afraid. She's very shy with strangers and it takes her a long time to warm up to people, if you approach her too quickly, she runs and hides. On Easter she spent most of the day under the ottoman, with her head peeking out with all the family over! This has frustrated us and we feel bad when she does this and we have wondered if there is anything we can do to change the behavior, but I just think it's who she is! The funny thing is Crosley we rescued from a family who weren't treating her right and she doesn't cower at all, she loves everyone!! |
