AKC and petstores Here in Canada the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) which is sorta like the Canadian version of AKC does not allow any dog that is sold in a petshop to be registered with them. I think this is great as it seems the CKC does not to support petshop sales and this also helps with the misconseption of the public that if a dog is licenced it must be healthy, purebred.... I was researching the AKC and found out that around 80% of the dogs that they register are sold in petstores. Do you feel that the AKC should stop registering dogs that are sold in petstores and do you feel that by registering these dogs they are profiting and contributing to the puppymills? |
YUP!!! that may be a better piece of legislation if how I was reading the bill is incorrect and it really is more harmful!!! |
I think eliminating the AKC from participating in pet shop sales would be at least a step in trying to stop the get rich mentality behind some of these people. |
One thing I just thought of is that here in Canada we only have the one registry the CKC but in the states there are many. So if it was just the AKC that stopped registering petshop dogs the other registries would just take over. Maybe my question should be "Should all U.S dog registeries stop registering petstore pups?" |
I think if they refuse to register Mill puppies (which I'm IN favor of) - then they should refuse to register Pet Store Puppies..then...maybe people would buy from reputable breeders if it were harder to register puppies - then again - maybe it wouldn't work - this is a hard question to answer. |
Akc Perhaps, the AKC should limit the number of litters a breeder can register per year..but you can register them in phony names, family members, friends etc..so a 10 litter limit could actually be 50 for the same person. I think each of us should call our local pet shops and take a poll...what registry are the pups, sold in that store? |
The problem is (and its been made clear in posts even on this forum) many people don't understand the importance of "AKC papers" or what that even means. People who buy dogs with APRI "papers" tend not to know what the difference is. IT's gotten so bad that I can't even keep up with all the organizations that will "register" dogs, many of whom are in league with pet shops and puppy mills. Many are very disappointed with the UKC, because dogs who will not be registered by AKC are often UKC registered. What's worse, there are many dogs out there with fake AKC papers! Have you noticed how many long and big Yorkies there are walking around? A common puppymill practise is to breed a Yorkie dog to a Silky bitch because the Silky is able to have more puppies. In theory, these dogs are mutts and yet, people purchase them with AKC papers. Now, how did that happen? I used to think that the simple solution to the pet shop problem was for AKC to self-regulate. All dogs who were sold from pet shops could not have papers, all dogs who were sold as pets would have limited registration and spay and neuter contracts, and voila! the problem would be resolved. Unfortunatly, its not the easy. The only way this problem is going to go away is with owner education. I had a "colliquey" with a YT member a couple of months ago regarding why people should buy from breeders and the importance of AKC papers. What is truly illustrative is not my arguments in favor of show breeders, but her arguments against them. She was very nice and polite - I am not saying anything bad about her - but worried me then, as it does now - is that she was very eloquently stating the postion of 90% of the dog buying public. I'll see if I can find that thread . . .. |

OK - here's how it goes . . If you follow the thread between me and Natalie you'll see the two sides of the coin pretty clearly. The thread started with someone saying she wanted a "Morkie" and I was responding to that. But the conversation changed to "what is the big deal about AKC papers and why should I buy from a show breeder": http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ipower+breeder |
registry I think I am going to start my own registry. Seriously...what is to stop me? You send me pictures of the puppy..if it looks like a purebred to me..and a check for $25, I will send you registration papers... I need a name... LRKC...Last Resort KC MVFKC..My Vacation Fund KC I think I like YTKC...Yorkshire Terrier KC...I really think there is nothing to stop me if I wanted to do this... |
Heck yeah I think its just giving the the go ahead to keep breeding and breeding... |
I have gotten many calls in the past 2 years from buyers of puppies in pet shops. I have heard these "They told me it was AKC but the papers they gave me said it was AKC-CPR.. That means it is AKC right? Not the other regs?" Well, NO IT DOES NOT! It means that your dog is microchipped and the you can register thechip in your name with the companion recovery center.. Duh, whassat? In the pet stores here in my area, more and more pups are reg with ACA..with the microchip application given the most explanation.. There is no doggie police, only registries. What we need to do is educate, educate, educate, even when we are not asked.. |
