Do you shave your Yorkie's ears?
 
If not, why? I shave Yoda's. :)

I'd like to hear the answers to that one. Our breeder and our vet [who both raise champion show dogs] advised us to keep the upper 1/3 of Toto's "leathers" cut because if that hair grows long it tends to pull the ears down and usually they won't perk back up! ;) So far they haven't given us any bad advice so I run everything by our vet before I do it ... even have her read and approve or disapprove the ingredients in dog food if we consider trying it for Toto! Just can't be too careful!! ;)

Yes, I shave Otis's ears with Wahl clippers. Actually, I shave his entire body with those clippers! It's fun, and he likes it too!

His WHOLE body?? :confused: You gotta post a pic of Otis when he gets his "fresh" haircut!! :p Toto would absolutely freeze is she didn't have her fur!!! :eek: That has got to be fun ... bet he does like it!! ;)

Yoda's top area is pretty shaved down, but the hair on his face and head is long, as is on his legs. Since Junebug lives in California, maybe it never gets that cold out there.

Yes, his whole body, except I leave the hair on his legs longer, giving him the appearance of wearing "baggy pants."

Buzzing is fun!! He gets cold sometimes, but it just gives me an excuse to buy him cute sweaters!

The weather here has been perfect this past week! In the wintertime, it doesn't get much colder than 40 degrees, and that's about all I can tolerate!

Does it snow in Seattle? I've actaully heard Seattle's weather is similar to San Francisco, just that it rains more.

Yes, it snows every year, about every two years it will stick on the ground for more than a day or two... It does rain a lot here, but last summer was great, I think 90 days or something straight of no rain. It does get in the 30s regularly in the wintertime, but Yoda really doesn't go out for too many walks then...

My husband and I live in South Korea (my husband is in the Army) and we are not very close to any vets (the Korean ones are very bad). Our Yorkie "Romeo" has some sort of skin problem a very bad skin problem, he looks like an old man, his skin is flaky wrinkled and shriveled up. He itches all over, I don't know what I can use at home to fix his problem and make him feel better. We feel awful for him, can any one help him? He is making himself bleed. Thanks!

Try Aveeno oatmeal bath. It works for Lucy and for a friend of mine whose grand yorkie has extemely sensitive, dry skin.

First look at what you are feeding -- make sure there is no corn or wheat in it -- those can cause skin problems with dogs that have allergies. Next see if a vet will test for hypothyroidism --there are other symptoms too but some dogs present first with skin problems like this. Replacing the thyroid hormone can clear it immediately if this is the problem. Also need to test the skin for problem parasites -- like mange/skin mites which will make for some pretty wicked skin problems. Those are the first 3 things I would check when skin problems arise.

kirby had the most beautiful long hair on his ears. i just loved it. then he went to the groomers and i told them i wanted his skirt cut and to leave the hair around his face alone. well they cut his ear hair. i just about died. its been about 2 months and it hasn't grown back much. i miss it

But i do trim them from the edges but i kind of want to let it grow and see how he looks with his hair long on the ears hmmmm dont know yet but i usually always trim never shave :animal-pa

As on member said...I would check his food...Maybe you could have a skin scraping done to make sure he doesn't have a skin problem...Maybe a yeast infection? A friend of mine has a Lhasa and his skin was HORRIBLE! He had such an awful odor to him that they wouldn't let him in the house (bad Mom and Dad!) they were going to have him put down:eek: They finally brought him to a vet (friend of theirs) and she took the dog for a month, did a skin scraping and found he had a yeast infection...she treated him for a month. (yeast infections can take a while to go away) He was very itchy also..

The lady I bought Sadie from shaved the top third of Ben's ears for me when we were visiting. I am getting ready to do it again and it is time to do Sadie's too. Her ears are not up yet and it is supposed to help. I am a little nervous about doing it on such little ones.

Okay, we trim (not really shave) the tips and clean the insides of Mojo's ears. I do like it when he has long hair up there though......but then again, I like it trimmed really short and tipped sometimes too! That is what he is right now.

I just trim it. His hair on his ears has grown pretty long, and his ears are still always standing up (unless he's sleeping)

This is an old thread :) ...I shave the top 1/3 of the ears too with the trusty Wahl Trimmer - I love that thing

wow this is an old thread but since its been dug up i see now harm in answering. i do not shave morgan's ears. she has a cute butterfly head hehehe
