What do you use to walk your Yorkie? I was wondering how many people use harnesses and collars to walk their Yorkies. I am thinking about getting harnesses because of the risk of collapsing their tracheas. |
i use a collar with a bell in the house and a harness for walks :) |
I checked collar b/c most of the time, that's all we do. We hook to his collar and go. .....buuuut I know that's not the best thing. Half the time, he does wear his army vest harness, and it holds him really well, and looks really cute. My husband says b/c Sully is a healthy, strong 9lbs, he won't have any trachea problems. If this isn't true, I need to somehow convince him otherwise. Any ideas, do let me know. |

I use a harness that is really annoying to put on, i need to get a step-in one |
I use a harness. I use it so there isn't any pressure any his neck but more importantly (to me) so I can pull him up quickly for any reason. We were just at the shore and while on a walk Gus stepped into a pile of shells on the street. I could tell it was painful and was able to pull him up before his paws got cut. We really haven't run into any big dogs on our walks but that is the main reason I want to be able to pull him up fast. |
I use the "gentle leader" for Willy. And yes the bigger Yorkies can develop the trachea problems, thats why we use the Gentle Leader with him. He started to have this hacky kind of cough & the vet felt that it was the early stages of collapsing trachea, and the recommended the Gentle leader & they also sell it. He has been using it for over 2 years now. He still isn't very fond of it, but he never leaves the house without it on, so he doesn't fight me to put it on. And he hardly ever hacks like that anymore, so it's working for us. Desiree, mom to Willy 13lbs of pure joy |

We use a collar with Lucy at home and for walks. We dod use a harness for a while but she refused to walk with it on and it rubbed as well so I am looking for a really fine one so it doesn't bother her so much and doesn't rub |
Stewie has a step-in harness I bought from Petedge for around 2 dollars and he has a "pretty" one with stars and stripes (red, white & blue) |
My vet recommends using a harness on small dogs. Their neck structures are delicate. I've been walking Zack with a harness since he was 10 weeks old. (or rather he's been walking me!) It's not an enjoyable experience getting it on him. He's a wiggle worm and I have to bribe him with treats. Once I have the harness on, he doesn't have a problem with it. I take the harness off when we are back inside the house. |
We have a really big back yard all fenced and mowed. We seldom take them outside the house or fence. When we go to the vet, I put a leash on their collar, but carry them. They wear cat break-away collars with little bells so they really don't hold up to the leash. |
I recently bought Fred a harness. I heard that walking them on collars is bad for toy breeds. They have small tracheas or whatnot. |
I use a harness. They seem to like it very well. |
Everone who is looking for an easy to use harness-see the product section. I found some nice ones on e-bay |
