Need some help with snow.
 
I went outside with Layla today in the snow to take pictures. If i keep the camera on auto all is well- but as soon as i put it in Av or any other manual setting- the picture is overexposed because of the brightness of the snow.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this? I tried messing with White Balance but that did nothing.

Change the aperture. The main function of a camera lens is to collect light. The aperture of a lens is the diameter of the lens opening and is usually controlled by an iris. The larger the diameter of the aperture, the more light reaches the film image sensor.

I'm not sure what kind of camera you're using but mine has different settings for snow, backlight, beach, water, night, sport (for motion), etc...and it automatically adjusts everything for me. Do you have any settings like that?

my point and shoot camera does but not my SLR.

So i can't ever have a low aperture when i'm shooting in snow? Well i guess that does make sense- the snow won't ever look "blurry" anyways.. lol.. thanks i'll give that a try next time.

There are a couple techniques you could use to help with the snow exposure.
Here's a link that explains how using exposure compensation can help. I also set my white balance setting on a cool temp setting. If you are using a manual mode (ap priority or shut priority or full manual), and have the option to do a manual white balance, that is preferred :)

Thanks! I wasn't really sure what to do with my exposure compensation but now I get it- i'll have to go out tomorrow and give it a go. I'll also have to play with my white balance- i tried the other day but i think my exposure was the main issue.

You can use whatever aperture you like, as long as you adjust for it. You can adjust the exposure a couple of settings (as mentioned)...really simple, see the manual and you'll see it's just a click that you can do for any pic, at any time, for the most part.

Also, you may want to switch your metering mode temporarily to, for example, spot metering....but honestly, I'd just try adjusting the exposure, try a couple shots to see how many "steps" you need to compensate for the snow, and then do that for your set.
