Prime Lens
 
OK, tell me why I need one and what it does. I am reviewing them on Amazon and I need one that auto focuses with the motor and I believe this one has that?

Breny, I'm not sure this lens has the motor in it. I read somewhere that the lens needed to say AF-S if had a motor. Look at this link to Nikon, it shows the lens you're looking at and one that says AF-S (both are under the standard category). The one you're looking at (under Tech Specs) says it does not have the AF-S Silent Wave Motor. Is Silent Wave what the autofocus motors are called. http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Ni...ses/index.page

I'm not sure about any of this. I just wanted to caution to read more about it before buying.

I got this one (Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras) yesterday from B&H, & my research indicates that it's a better choice for a DX format camera than the 50mm lens. The 35mm is equivalent to a 50mm lens on a DX format camera. It's available on amazon for $199.95. My initial impression is that I'll be using this as my primary lens. It is slow at auto focusing though. However, I enjoy watching it focus.

BTW, it's one of Ken Rockwell's three dream team lenses for the Nikon DX format DSLR camera.

Because i got to play with a 50 & you still have to back up more than i want to, I like taking pretty close up picture's.
Plus it is a Ton cheaper.

Thanks...it helps to understand because different people like different styles in their photo's...but I certainly like cheaper....:D

Speaking about taking pretty close up pictures, I also got the new 85mm micro yesterday. It was several tons on the expensive side.

I took a micro picture of some of the steel bristles on a Christensen dog brush. Why? Because I couldn't find anything more suitable to shoot. It's impressive. I'd post the photo except unwanted dog hairs are present.

So as Breny asked in her OP, why do you need a prime lense? If you have an 18 - 55, and set it on 55 how is that different than having a 55 prime?
