Homemade ice cream w/machine Has anyone used an ice cream machine? My MIL gave me one (YAY) and I want to make cinnamon ice cream for Xmas but I am a bit intimidated about the ice cream prep BEFORE it goes into the machine. Also, I'm not familiar with the phrases "custard" ice cream, for example, so what is "normal" ice cream called? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!!!!!!! Let the countdown to Christmas begin!!!! |
"Custard" ice cream is also called "soft serve ice cream", like what comes out of the spiggot at Dairy Queen! I guess regular ice cream is just called ice cream! I love my ice cream maker....I just use my grandmother's recipe, which is a cooked ice cream, then you put it into the ice cream maker and add the ice and rock salt around the outside and plug 'er in! |
Homemade ice cream is one of life's luxury items - truly an indulgence one hardly sees anymore. It's so good it hurts to remember just how good my last homemade ice cream was!!! Go for it and make it until you learn how to get it right. I'll bet your "mistakes" will still be delish! Mmmmm - lucky you! :) Self-confession: A home ice cream maker and a bread machine are two indulgences I haven't the character to own personally, as I would live off nothing but home made bread and ice cream 24/7/365. I couldn't waste any calories or tummy space on anything healthy as long as I had the wherewithal to make those two items for myself at home. |

I, too, am tempted by bread and ice cream! I have used a bread machine for years and the only way I found to regulate the portions was to add the calories of all the ingredients and weigh the loaf so I could divide it in appropriate portion sizes. Otherwise, I would just rip a huge slab off, add butter and watch my years reduce! |
That ice cream recipe sounds like my grandma's....we never made the cinnamon, just vanilla and then we also made peach and strawberry ice cream. It is delicious!! Just add your cooked cream/sugar mixture very slowly to the eggs and they wont scramble! VERY SLOWLY is the operative phrase! WHISK constantly while adding the cream to the eggs! Years ago, we went to a really super resturant outside of Scottsdale, Az.....Pennicle Peak. It is (was!!) a SUPER steak house if anyone is in the area and has never been....for dessert, they had hot apple pie with cinnamon ice cream! It was to die for!!! I will be saving your recipe for the cinnamon ice cream, to give it a try! The basic custard is the same as my grandma's, and it is great! |

I have one and make dairy free ice cream using coconut milk and sweeten with dates. I made coffee flavor last time and it was delicious. Enjoy your new machine! |

Just wanted to give an update.. I made this ice cream and it was so amazing that I almost cussed when I tried it..LOL Light, creamy and wonderfully full of cinnamon. I'd definitely recommend making your own ice cream if you ever get the chance! I'm now going to try to see if there are any recipes for rocky road frozen yogurt. Not til next month though.. This recipe made tons and I'm too scared to eat a large amount cuz I know how much cream went into the making!!! YUMMY |

That was the way my grandma made it for all her kids, my momma being one of those kids, at least as far back as 1918 and probably longer ago than that! It takes time and tender loving care, but boy, what you end up with is amazing!!! Summer time, we add peaches, banannas, or strawberries or blackberries or cantalope.......and of course over Christmas, I use egg nog for about half the milk/cream..... |
