Okra -- Yum or Yuck Just picked over 15 lbs of okra from my small vegetable garden. I absolutely love okra - raw, fried, boiled plain or with tomatoes, in soups and stews. So, how do you like your okra? |
Definite YUCK! Sorry!:p I had just moved from Ohio to South Carolina, and it was being served at my elementary school cafeteria. I didn't know what the heck it was, and everyone made fun of me for being afraid to try it. They were all eating it like popcorn. I tried it...bleh. I remember feeling so alone, with my Northernness and not fitting in with the kids who all grew up on sweet tea, greens and okra, and she-crab soup. I had never tasted any of those things. Haven't tried okra once since then but I refuse to accept my tastes probably have changed :p I just don't like any southern food. |
I love okra! In fact, I just added some to a soup for dinner ;) Oh Carmen...you are missing out on a ton of really yummy foods!...fried green tomatoes are probably my all time fav southern food but I make mine with bread crumbs & lots of garlic. Great, now I want them. |
Fried okra, served with pinto beans, fresh ripe tomatoes and fresh corn - my favorite summertime dinner! I'm not a fan of okra cooked any other way - it's too slimy in soups, etc. |
I love okra!!! I love it fried and I cut it up and soak in sweet or buttermilk. Put flour, salt and a dab of cornmeal in a gallon ziplock container add a few potatoes cubed and some onion and the okra shake it up really good and then fry it in my electric skillet..yum yum yum. I am not sure the variety of okra but there is one that has red on the okra pod that is really better than the okra that is a solid green color. I also loved pickled okra...do not like it boiled. I prefer it crunch:p |

I LOVE OKRA! Any which way is fine with me. :D I tried it pickled but it was too sweet for my taste. I don't know if it was just the way this person made it but I would like to try it a more tart way...like pickles? I love it in soup with other veggies and pork. I love it deep fried and battered too. I would say this is one of my favorite veggies. :) |
EWWWW! sorry! I don't even like the word!! :p |

I will try it this weekend! :) |
YUM! One of my favorites, but only if its cooked a certain way -- Breaded in Jiffy cornbread mix and fried until it would burn if you cooked it any longer. Don't stir very often, just let it cook in clumps. Its not slimy at all, and the cornbread mix gives it a great sweetness. |
