Healthy Grocery List?! Bf and I are moving into a new apartment, no more roommates and no more sharing the fridge/freezer/pantry!!! YAY! We would also like to eat more healthy, and I'm compiling a big list to take with me to the grocery store to stock up our completely empty fridge @the new place. We're looking to cut down on "frozen dinner" type things, eat less preservatives, stop going out to eat so much, and completely cut out the junk food (well, mostly) and eat more healthy. What should I add to my list so that we can have food that will last us a while, and be healthy for us? I'd like to get more into cooking real meals, not just making a hamburger helper boxed dinner... |
I'm also interested in growing our own veggies, or herbs...anyone have some suggestions of ones I definitely should try to grow? Like what are some staples that I could grow myself? |
Congratulations on ur move,! Very exciting. I do weight watcher's so i try to make the healthiest choice so i can eat more. Fruits and veggies are a given. We do alot of chicken breast. Stir frys, soups tacos, BBQ, I like extra lean ground beef for tacos, spaghetti, baked ziti, meatloafs, hamburgers, . My new favorite thing is the Kraft fresh takes. U can mix it with the extra lean hamburger meat and the burgers are yummy. They make one for chicken too, u bake it and its like a chicken tender. I use potatoes , sweet or white, and cut them thin spray with a cooking spray use a grill seasoning and bake. Very low calorie french fry! |
Wow... You sure have wonderful plans! I would say try to stay away from processed foods as much as you can. Keep meals simple but full of flavor. Gee...there are so many great web sites for recipes you can't lack for inspiration. Frozen fruits for healthy smoothies, dry bean with rice to other sides make really inexpensive meals. I have been making a bean soup..sometime green pea, lentils, 15 bean soup etc once a week. I use recipes on the back of Lipton soup mixes..the garlic chicken is great. Other brands such as korr have good ones to..chicken with leek sauce comes to mind. Also I like salads as sides..full of veggies. Oh..and homemade pizza is always Good and a lot healthier. I teach food production and do units on healthy eating so I could go on for days..sorry Good luck and enjoy your new place |
Good for you! Way to go! For staples I would suggest dried beans and lentils - high in protein and fiber. Rice is also a good to mix with a small amount of meat to stretch out the food budget - try all different kinds they are delish. Egg dishes - we love ham & cheese omlettes. As far as growing your own veges - tomatoes are a good start. It's hard to kill them :D. Cucumbers and green beans and sugar peas are also good choices for a table garden. |
Since there is only two of you, think ahead-We bought a mess of veggies and some chicken cutlets, and it fed us shish kebabs for two nights. I took the veggie trimmings (not scraps, just too small for a skewer) and put them in foil with marinade and spices and grilled them too-cooked once, ate 3x. I cooked a whole mess of rice-we ate it 2 nights, the dog has been getting some (upset tummy lately) and we will have the rest tonight. We're using the leftover chicken plus some more veggies for and leftover rice for chinese food. Sir prefers fresh veggies but the quality down here is usually less than stellar so they don't keep long. We usually buy both fresh and frozen. |
