Are convection ovens supposed to do this? I know not a single soul who has a convection oven, and I have not been able to get even my whirlpool man to help me with my question! Just got the thing a few weeks ago, and have never used one before. When I set it to preheat, the convection fan turns on for 5 seconds, off for 5 seconds, on and off over and over. Never stays on long enough to even get the fan up to full speed before it clicks off again. Does this the entire time the oven is on. Do they normally do this? I feel like it isn't supposed to, but the whirlpool guy was not helpful! He knew about as much as I did from what I can tell. |
:wavey: Hi neighbor! I have a convection/traditional oven; when it's set to convection the fan blows all the time. A convection oven uses the fan to cook a bit faster than what a "normal" oven does. |
Hi Erin, Every convection oven I've ever had has a fan running the whole time it's on (and, actually, for a while after it's turned off...I think to cool it off again). But, maybe the brand new ones are different? |
I always hear the fan in ours turn on and off but I never payed much attention to how often it does it. Now that I'm thinking about it though, I think it's normal? Does the temperature display go up while its doing this? |
Hey to you too neighbor! :D Schooby, it preheats pretty slowly actually. Whether I'm using convection or not. The whirlpool kid (he sounded younger than me and I'm 25...lol) kept saying "Oh good that means it's at the right temp"...no, it's still below 100 degrees and clicking off literally every 5-10 seconds! The only convection oven I've ever used before this was a giant commercial one at our church. The fan in that one stayed on the entire time. I swear, every time I make a big purchase, SOMETHING inevitably goes wrong! lol. I knew it would happen too! |
Hello I think the fan stays on the whole time. I do know the fan is how the heat is circulated... and you cook at a lower temp or for a shorter time. Good luck |
i worked in food service for 9 years and even tho the ovens were prob from the 1700's:rolleyes: they would run the entire time until it got up to temp. the only other time it would kick off is if i opened the doors. it could be that it's not registering as latched or maybe the thermostat is no good, tho i am by far not an expert. |
Mine runs all the time too except if I open the door. Love my convection oven :) |
I have a convection/microwave oven and when we use the convection part (which sadly is not often enough to have justified the purchase) the fan stays on the whole time. Did you get whirlpool brand? If so, I would call whirlpool directly. Sounds like something is not working right, unless that is how their brand works. I have a GE Profile so maybe mine works differently. |

Ugh, I KNEW something was up! Looks like I have to educate the customer service crew then. Thank you all! Wonder how I go about getting this issue repaired. I was out of an oven for 2 months trying to get a new one...I have 5 cakes to do next month. I cannot be without again! :( |
I have only used mine a couple of times, but I read in my owners manual there is no need to preheat when using the convection oven. Hope this helps. |
Does it only do it when you preheat or does it do it the whole time? Also, I wonder if this fan on fan off, could be some sort of energy saving device? |

I never give it a chance unless I'm doing cakes, but when I set it on convection, it does preheat. It's a digital display and it says "preheating" and takes the same amount of time as the regular bake setting to do so, which is painfully slow! The fan doesn't even get up to speed all the way before it clicks off, and it does it from the time I turn it on until I turn it off. It's been on pretty much all day (2 bigs cakes this weekend) and it's done it the whole time. I called maytag again today and they talked to me like I was stupid. I KNOW this isn't right. Grrr. DH says to let it go, at least it cooks food. I payed $1000 for this oven and I want it to work the way it's supposed to dangit! Guess Whirlpool will be getting a nice email from me this evening. The elements on the cooktop do this also. Just when the water gets to a rolling boil, it will audibly click off and the water will stop rolling...then a few seconds later it will audibly click back on and get going again. I miss my ugly old almond coil-top! :( |
