Need guidence... :confused: I have adopted a little 7 yrs. old neutered boy named Bailey. He was raised in Seattle and is now in Moses Lake. My dear, dear friend passed away and he was left in my loving care. However, he has very dry skin and is itching. I have had him a week and have bathed him with an oatmeal bath and gotten a specific spray from the Vet. Does anyone know how long it takes for the itching to stop and also, how may times should I give him his oatmeal bath? Many thanx Jeneen please reply to jeneenr@genext.net :) |
You have a good soul Jeneen and I know your little one will give you years of love and affection back. During the winter time many Yorkie's get dry skin because of heat in the home but a number of other things can also effect their skin. One of the main thing is what are you are feeding this little one? If corn is one of the main ingrediants then this might be one of the reasons Bailey is itching. Also Yorkie's do much better with amino-acids added to their food. I use Salmon oil and other members use Missing-link (Petsmart carries this). At the most you should only bath a Yorkie once a week and many of us go 2 weeks during the winter months so as not to dry out their skin. Some foods may also cause itching as well. Have you looked into possibly changing Bailey's diet? And welcome to YorkieTalk! |

You are so generous in taking over the care for little Bailey. You have already been given some great info about dry itchy skin. I hope you find a solution. Possible allergies to food, fleas/parasites, lack of humidity, etc could be the problem?? I've read that Linatone, a food supplement with fatty acids can aid in dry skin also. (I've used a tad of olive oil mixed with the kibble before also to help w/ dry skin) It also is very important to make sure all the shampoo is rinsed out. Any shampoo residue left on the skin and coat can cause problems. You might wanna check with your vet as to how often he feels bathing Bailey is best. Some Yorkies can handle more often bathing then others. Hope your little one begins to feel better. |
