Introduction Hi all! I'm new to YT (and Yorkie ownership) and just wanted to introduce myself. I am a college student in Southern Oregon (formerly Seattle), and my new family addition is an 11 week old male Yorkie named Winston. Before he joined us I was a "strictly cat" person, but he has brought so much joy and laughter into my life (and I've only had him a week)! My three cats aren't very happy about him yet...they are used to having mom all to themselves... but they are getting used to it. The week has not been uneventful, however. The day after I got him, he went into hypoglycemic shock and had to be rushed to the vet. We bonded well over the next 24 hours because I had to stay up with him and force feed him every hour. I was so glad to see posts from other owners with similar experiences (not that they were good experiences) because I thought I had done something to hurt Winston! I had no idea that Yorkies were prone to hypoglycemia and I wish the breeder would have warned me! The vet explained that he must have had a tough time adjusting to the new house and cats, and he has been perfect ever since. Anyway, looking forward to sharing more ideas, experiences, and advice with you all! ~Heather |
Hi, Heather, let me be the first to welcome you to YT! You will love it here. Great advice for your Yorkie and a lot of friendly and witty people. I'm sorry you and Winston had to go through hypoglycemic shock. Sounds like you were the perfect mom, however. And my experience with dogs is that surviving things like that creates a bond between owner and pooch that will last forever. Good to have you. Now send pictures! |
Hello & Welcome to YT! Congradulations on your new baby as well!!! I hope you find YT as helpful and fun as I have! |
Welcome to our YT family! We hope you love it here as much as we do. I was strictly a "cat person" before I got my 1st yorkie, Sully......now I'm an obsessive dog person, LOL! |

Hi Lunadee, Being a Newbie and from Coos Bay, OR, I was scanning NW Members. I just wanted you to know my Chipper, 11 yrs, is Hypoglycemic and we have dealt with it over the years. Today he is as intelligent, strong and playful as ever, although he still has seizures periodically and I hold him tightly until they pass and then give him Nutra-cal. I hope it was one time with Winston. Chipperdancing |
