Mare Just gave Birth, need HELP! Hi everyone. I just had to help my Aunts Horse Last night. She was in labor starting around 3:00 pm and I put her in a different stall so I could clean hers and put fresh straw down for her and while I was sraping the last little bit out of her stall she started getting real restless, I noticed she was leaking ALOT of water (at first I thought she was just peeing but after about 1 1/2 minutes I knew is had to be her water), so I hurried and put fresh straw down and got her into HER stall and as soon as she walked in she laid down and started pushing. after a few minutes one foot emurged and about 15 minutes later the other, but them the baby seamed to be stuck, so me and another lady just kind of kept a stready force of holding the foals feet to help the mother get the rest of the foal out. A few minutes later the baby was out (AND she is BIG). Its a little girl and she is doing wonderful. What I need help with is the mother tore kinda bad. she is torn from her.........well i guess there are no better words........from her pee pee to her butt hole. We couldn't get a vet out (couldn't get ahold of any that late) but one we called and did get ahold of said to leave it and let it heal on its own, and if she needed it she could have reconstructive surgery in about 5 months. To be honest I dont see how the mare can even poop. Plus she could get an infection and everything else. Also she will not let the baby nurse, we tryed to tie her and hold her head so she cant keep moveing from the foal and then she kicked the baby. But if the baby gets two feet from her she whinnies for the foal to come closer to her. What can we do? |
i hope someone can help you out. i know nothing about birthing horses. congrats on the baby |
your mare is in serious danger. there should be no reason why you can't get a vet this morning. |
You mare needs to be stitched up. If she isn't she'll get poop in the wrong areas & that can cause an infection. You need to call a different vet that can come out right away & stitch her up. The vet will give you instructions on how to keep it clean & sterile until it can heal all the way up. How's the baby doing, is she up & sucking? Did the mare expel the placenta? If she hasn't you need to get a vet out to help with that too or that can cause an infection. |
You need to find a vet who will come out and assess the damage. The foal MUST take in sufficient colostrum within the first 36 hours to ensure tht she will have antibodies. I am sending you a pm..... |
Yes the placenta is out it took about two hours but I kept tieing it up and it came out good. The foal is doing really good but like I said above the mother is not wanting her to nurce, I think it is because her bag is so full that it hurts because other than that she is really good with the baby. Rain (the foal) was up and walking within 20 minutes of birth and is trying to nurse as much as mom lets her. But we had to prity much hog tie the mother so she wouldn't hurt the baby while trying to nurse. This is the mares first foal. Twister (the mom) is 16 hands and Denny (the dad) is 16.1 hands. The foal is about 48-50 inches tall allready! She's a BIG girl and we named her Rain. I called vets all last night and finally got ahold of the one we normally use at about 6 this morning. He will be here anytime so I will keep you posted. |

OKAY, I have great news. Mother is now letting the foal nurse (thanks Cindy) I put a warm towell on her bag to soften it up and she seemed to be really releaved! Now The baby is nurseing and running around in the correl. Our normal vet we use finally called around 11:00 this afternoon and came out and stiched the inside of the mare and GLUED the outside. The mare didn't like that to well but she is now looking to be a little more relaxed. Mother and baby both got Tetnis shots and baby got her farm shots as well. Wasn't expecting to have such a BIG vet bill but it is worth it to have BOTH mom and baby healthy! I will post pics the next time I get out to the barn. Thanks everyone. And thank you Cindy for letting me talk to you and giveing me encouragment to do this! All are safe and doing GREAT! Thanks. Moms name is Twister and we decided to name the baby Rain. She is so spunky and ALL Legs.... |
