Maya has a terrible skin problem Maya has had some skin issues in the past year and we seemed to finally get it under control when they diagnosed her with hypothyrodism. She has been on meds for months and her skin seemed to clear up. In the past week I started to notice the skin issues again. They are round patches of oily waxy lesions that scrape off and take all the hair around it off as well. She has lost so much coat even though it's hard to tell if you didn't see her before as she has a massive coat. Her tail is going bare as well as her rear and areas around her neck, head and muzzle. I took her to the vet and unfortunatley got the new one who is pretty inexperienced and he's like I don't know what it is but it is pretty bad. Then after looking at her for 10 minutes says it's a mystery to him. He said the only thing he could think of is that is an immune disorder and treatment would be steroids and with her heart problem he wouldn't want to put her on them. So I said should I take her to a dermatologist specialist and he said that would be a good idea!! So we go Thursday. I feel so bad for her. Has any one experienced anything like this? Thanks |
oh no...have you tried the sulphur shampoos ? poor baby...that really sounds hard to clear up and it's probably even harder to keep from coming back once you do clear it up...it could be the season change ?? I remember my husbands cocker Lady getting funny skin lesions but they'd go away after a month or so of the medicated shampoos... good luck !!! |
i do remember a pom pom from the last hospital i worked at that had the same problem. the poor dear was almost bald. does maya have mites or was the hair loss only from the hypothyrodism? have you had her levels check again since the hair loss started again? |
The vet today said her most recent Thyroid test I think about 6 weeks ago showed the meds were working and that he didn't think it was thyroid related. He did wonder if it was seasonal also so hopefully the dermatologist will be able to find out what is wrong with my poor baby. |

Hmm, could several things. Have you had a complete bloodwork up done, sometimes dry itchy skin & hair loss can be a sign of adrenal disease or cushings disease. Or could be diet related, what kind of food do you have her on? Or try the dermatologist, have him do a scrape to see if perhaps its fungal? Oh good luck I feel so bad for her & helpless.... Lynne |
