A Question for Those Owned By Two Dogs, (esp. Yorkies and Chis) Hello all, Wow, it has been a long time since I've posted on this website! Mia has been such a cute and healthy li'l girl that I almost forgot about this forum altogether. Well, the good news is that Mia will be getting a Chihuahua baby brother in about four weeks, and I would like to do my best to make sure that she does not feel neglected or "replaced" with this new addition to our family. I've read that Chis are very dominant, but so is my little Mia, making me a little apprehensive about this transition. So, what I would like to ask you is: oh, wise and experienced owners of two dogs, I appeal to you, how did you introduce the second puppy without traumatizing the first? P.S. Mia is now a ten-month-old spunky and sassy Yorkie. |
Anyone? |
I had my chi first and then got my yorkie and yes my chi was a bit jealous especially because Chloe required sooooo much attention becuase she was sooo little and had hypoglycemia. But anyways l tried to be sure and give Tink as much attention as possible so she didnt feel replaced. I dont know what to really tell you besides just be sure to give each equal amount of affection, they may act jealous at first but they will warm up to eachother. |
I too had my chi first, then a pom then my yorkie. I actually kept them seperated for a couple of days, kept the yorkie in the kitchen gated from the other two dogs. They could see her and smell her I just didnt let the yorkie invade their space as soon as she came in the house. I also gave my chis plenty of attention and affection, she did get a little jealous, but now she loves Lily. When it came time to introduce them I did it in an area that all the dogs share like the family room and just put them in the floor and let them take their own time in getting to know each other. The pom loved her immediately, my chi didn't actually get near her for a couple of hours. Just don't leave them unsupervised until you know they get along. Give it time, Im sure they will get along fine. |
When I got Cali 1 1/2 years ago Maya my 9 year old pom just ignored her and growled at her when she was bothering her or came near her when she had a bone. As the time went by, they lay by each other but because Maya was so old they really never played together. So I thought when I got Pixie a 13 month old Yorkie, last week that Cali would be happy to have a playmate. Wrong, Cali has been mopey and jealous but they do lay by each other and play/fight a little. I hope it gets better. Its hard because Pixie isn't housebroken so she needs a lot of attention and prasing and Cali gets jealous. I have had her 10 days and Cali is getting a little less mopey. They seem to interact more when I am gone and my husband or dtr are watchinh them. |
