Kitten advice Hi everyone. I would like to ask for advice from those of you who already had cat(s) when you purchased your Yorkie. How did you handle the introduction? Is there anything special you did to make sure that they get along? My kitten is not aggressive, she is the sweetest thing ever and I feel so bad for her because Remy (my new puppy) keeps chasing her around the house - I cannot let him loose in the same room with her because he immediately starts running after her. She can't have a moment of peace with him. I have tried a number of things to get them acquainted - had mom hold Alisa (the kitten), while I held Remy. When we do that, they sniff each other and all is fine, since I restrain him to keep him from scaring her. We tried this many, many, many times, all without any results. He still chases her nonstop. When he is in his playpen, she likes to sit in front of it and watch him. When he sees her, he starts jumping at her and sometimes barking, scaring her once again. Don't really know what more I can do. Please advice! Anna |
It's a dogs nature to chase the cats! lol When we brought Grayson home we left him in his crate so the cats could "sniff" him and check him out with him chasing them. He still chases them 4 months later they will tolerate him but they are not buddies, Pepper will even play with him a little bit but Dusty wants nothing to do with him, though that is how she was with pepper. Good luck it took us about a good month for the cats to realize Grayson wasn't a visitor but was indeed part of the family. |
When we got Pippa she wouldnt leave my 2 cats alone, she got swiped all the time, even had her eyeball scratched and had to have drops for it for a month. I asked the vet and he said 'she will learn' and she did! She still goes up to them but if they even flinch she moves real quick, that much she has learnt. |
Remember this. Cats learn to "live up". I did not understand what my friend meant by that until I experienced it. If your kitten does not like what your Yorkie is doing, your kitten will get to high ground (a chair, a counter top, a table). If your kitten is scared, it will hide in a place that the Yorkie cannot go, like under the sofa. Gracie loves to chase and bark at her four kitty brothers and sisters. Often times, the cats taunt her into doing it. It is a game, and good exercise for all. An ex-pen works great to secure the pup when you can't be around. Let them have at it. Your kitten can take better care of itself than you give it credit for. And have fun watching the games they play! |
Thank you for replies, everyone! I just felt like a really really bad kitten mommy when I brought Remy home. Like I was subjecting her to undue stress. I hope they will learn to at least "co-exist", I would really hate for her to be scared of him for the rest of their lives, even though she can hide or jump up high. I heard of great stories of how Yorkies and cats can be buddies and even share the same bed - guess that's not happening with these two, lol. |
