Poor coat & shedding My boxer sheds horribly. I seriously think that her hair falls out and automatically regenerates and then falls out again within minutes, because thats how much she sheds. She is completely an indoor dog but I take her outside and brush her constantly and the idea is to keep brushing her until I dont get as much hair but that moment never comes. She also has really bad dander which has only gotten worse within the past few weeks. Ive always read and heard from vets that excessive shedding and poor coats is a sign of poor nutrition but I have been feeding Penny nutro for quite some time and about a month ago I switched her to Nutro Utra all natural food (that stuff isnt cheap especially when you are feeding a 90lb boxer) and Ive been giving her missing link supplements too. It seems since I started the missing link (which is supposed to improve skin and coat) she has actually gotten worse. her coat is dull and she is shedding like crazy! What can I do? And why would her coat be getting worse? All my girls are on all natural dog food and treats now. Shouldnt that be better for them? |
Well if you figure out the answer let me know.;) My mom's border collie is shedding excessively now. She scratches or shakes and chunks of hair fly everywhere. It is really bad. She is on a good diet and we just put her on missing link this week. Hopefully the ML will work. But we have a theory why she all the sudden started to shed like this. It has gotten really cold here so we had to turn the furnace on, it is a gas furnace. And it is a dry heat and is drying everyone out including the other dogs, even my skin has been dry. Daisy started shedding when we turned the furnace on, before then she hardly ever shed. So we went out and got a humidifier to put moisture back in the air. Hopefully this will help too. The only other thing that seems to work for her shedding is some pills I get from the vet, I think they are called dermacaps and they are extra strength and they help alot. They only thing is they can be expensive. We didn't want to spend that much money but if everything we tried doesn't work we won't have a choice. So hopefully everything we try will work. Sorry I can't really help you. I hope you can get it figured out soon, the shedding can be such a pain!! |
my lab, Laci, sheds like that too! No matter what I do with her, she sheds worse than all my others put together! She lives inside too and I brush her til she cant stand it... LOL... If anyone finds a miracle cure, I would love to know it! d |

Isnt it absolutely amazing how much hair that they loose when you brush them? Like with penny I get so much hair you'd think she woudl be bald but no!! There is plenty more where that came from, lol. |
YES... I dont know about you but I KILL vacuum cleaners in my house... my Chi Mix(Tinkerbell, too)... she sheds TUMBLEWEEDS... LOL |

Thank you for posting this, I will defiently ask my vet about that. I really feel like there has got to be somethign causing this since she sheds so bad and its only getting worse. She also keeps putting on a lot of weight despite being on weight control food and a diet and Im wondering if this could also be a sign of thyroid problems. |

This is not hard to treat, tablets for thyroid are not expensive as some medications are. I knew of a Yorkie years ago that got underactive thyroid in her later years. She lived to be 15 years, just got her pill every morning and did well. |
